Conn and Hal Iggulden have sculpted a childhood literary opus that is not only a wonderful compilation, but a handsome book to boot.
The Igguldens have put into book form the majority of boyhood curiosities that have been missing from American culture for generations. With so many boys being raised by single mothers or who have fathers who work long hours, this book comes just in time to restore and maintain Neverland for future generations.
I love the sections on pirate flags and famous battles.
As a boy-at-heart, I found much of the topics fascinating. Much of the activities the book covers were things I discovered as a boy, but without such an inspiring guide.
These are the things boys should know, with lots of hands-on, down-and-dirty, healthy steps to manhood.
I cannot imagine this book being any less healthy for girls either.
This book has an inspiring trailer on You Tube as well.

What a marvelous idea for a book! It puts into action what G. K. Chesterton wrote in a 1906 magazine article:

*****
A child's instinct is almost perfect in the matter of fighting; a child always stands for the good militarism as against the bad. The child's hero is always the man or boy who defends himself suddenly and splendidly against aggression. The child's hero is never the man or boy who attempts by his mere personal force to extend his mere personal influence. In all boys' books, in all boys' conversation, the hero is one person and the bully the other. That combination of the hero and bully in one, which people now call the Strong Man or the Superman, would be simply unintelligible to any schoolboy....

But really to talk of this small human creature, who never picks up an umbrella without trying to use it as a sword, who will hardly read a book in which there is no fighting, who out of the Bible itself generally remembers the "bluggy" [bloody] parts, who never walks down the garden without imagining himself to be stuck all over with swords and daggers--to take this human creature and talk about the wickedness of teaching him to be military, seems rather a wild piece of humour. He has already not only the tradition of fighting, but a far manlier and more genial tradition of fighting than our own. No; I am not in favour of the child being taught militarism. I am in favour of the child teaching it.
****

And for those rainy days with mommy makes the young warrior stay indoors, get him wonderful, imaginative books such as Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer/Huckleberry Finn, and Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, along with tales of exploration like those of Ernest Shackleton and the two brave young men in Across Asia on a Bicycle

I bought this for my nephew and think it is a wonderful book. It has all the activities from "the good old days" and things every boy should know! (How to make a willow whistle, tree house, magic tricks) It has a bit of everything to keep your boy busy!

This is a wonderful book for "boys" of all ages, not to mention the "girls" too! Written in a style and format reminiscent of books you see from the turn of the 20th century, this gem presents hours of useful and entertiaining tidbits of information. It is in a short format, most articles are only a few pages or less in length. Originally written for British readers, it has been "Americanized', and updated with current, as well as vintage articles. It's easy reading and great if you have a limited schedule and don't want to read the whole book or lose your train of thought. Looks like it was printed in 1910 with a sturdy binding, and gold gilt lettering. This book is a reader and a keeper. One you can pass on to the children and grandchildren.

I took this book out of our local library before buying it on ebay. It's not the type of book you can get use out of in just a couple of weeks. It's the kind of book you need to own and refer to over and over again. It's basically everything a boy needs to know from how to tie different types of knots to how to identify different types of sentences. Grammar, building, presidents, it's all in this book. We'll be enjoying this for years and years to come!

I bought this book for my young son, but I have spent more time reading it than he has!

It's great, covers most everything a boy, young or old, needs to know - from astronomy and mathematics to historical battles, the rules of rugby, even paper airplane design! And it has a humorous little section on girls!

For the MAN who wants to be a GREAT DAD!

I bought 3 copies of this book for our three sons in law who have boys. They are all loving fathers and want to be great Dads. I had seen an interview with the author of the book on a morning news show and thought his would be a great gift for Father's Day. When I when to the national chain bookstore near our house, they were all sold out so I thought it must be a really good book. I found these online for my sons-in-law. This book covers all the fun and interesting things boys should learn from men as they grow up. I never had a son or a brother, only 4 girls, but it looked like fun things to me. Even has a chapter on "Girls". It is very simple and straight forward with line drawings, nothing fancy. Every father of boys needs one!

  ALL AROUND FUN

Oh to be young again. What a wonderful book that covers so many topics of interest to the young man. I bought this upon recommendation from a friend for my 7 year old. Although most of its subjects are too much for him yet, the ideas are spectacular and we have enjoyed reading it together. Much of it reminds me of adventures of my brothers during childhood. I enjoyed reading the sage advice on girls and have read through some great instructions as well. It is truly a well rounded book with history, advice and good old fashioned fun all rolled up in one super book.

  Great Book for All Ages

The Dangerous Books for Boys is a well-humored approach on how technology has changed our life and habits. As I am in my early 30s, fortunately I had the chance to live in my childhood the time when street play and hand crafted toys were the normal thing for a kid to do and enjoy. Computers and video games were available, but using them was one of the options that we had at that time, not the only option as today's kids have, or at least seem to prefer over any other more "archaic" thing.

These were times when things didn't go too fast, didn't need to be immediate and, most importantly, making real friends was easier. Things could be found (sometimes with some hard work) by browsing a book at the library or through any other method of extensive research, and the pleasure of discovering something new was more rewarding than it is today, when a simple click can resolve our problems in a minute. The technology evolution made our lives easier, no doubt about it, but as there's a price to pay for every thing that changes, easier in this case does not necessarily mean more pleasant.

At the same time this makes a nostalgia book for older people, it makes also a great reading for children, who will certainly be amazed to see how those "archaic" and "ridiculously ordinary stuff" used to make us tremendously happy.

A MUST HAVE FOR BOYS & GIRLS OF ALL AGES!!
Review created: 12/10/07

The title caught my attention; I thought it would be an amusing book to give my on-the-threshold-of-adoloscence 12 year old grandson. I was absolutely blown away when I received the book and started reading through it (before giving it to him). It is an amazing compilation of information about everything under the sun that a boy (or even girl!!) might wonder about. A marvelous incentive for the adults in a child's life to slow down and take the time to do some of the fun & interesting activities with their child. It's the kind of book that will be used and well-loved for generations! I may buy a second copy as backup, in case the original gets to tattered!!!

I bought this book to share with my son, in order to be able to spend more time doing things together. I read about it in a church youth magazine but didn't expect the amount of stuff to do in the book. With today's kids becoming more and more sedentary this is a great book to help Dads and Sons get off the couch and start doing things together again.

My daughter-in-law and I both read the article in Times magazine in which the author mentioned this book several times. She's a teacher and was delighted when I told her that I'd bought this book for my grandson's birthday present. My son and grandson were really psyched-up when they started thumbing through it, and tell me it's such fun, with all it's experiments and information.

This event was witnessed by Grandma. Boy read Introduction and reviewed Table of Contents. He looked at the 3 bookmarks inserted: baseball stars, Navajo coding, and water balloon construction; and he chose to read 7 Wonders of the World, Astronomy and Tree Houses.
Who could ask for anything more?

I bought this book for my step-grandson's tenth birthday after seeing the authors interviewed on a TV show. I was a little concerned when he began to open up all of the action toys and Lego Kits at his birthday party, but when he opened the book he seemed genuinely excited by the title. Best of all, my daughter told me he didn't put it down all of the way home and kept saying "Hey,look at this!" about various topics in the book.

This book is an awesome excuse to get you, your son, and your dad outside and do what boys are meant to do, experement and learn and have fun. There is so much in this book that helps a boy learn basic, fun, educational things that others don't want to share anymore. No computer needed. Just an emagination and alot of quality time is what it takes to have a great time. This book covers it all, you will be not be cheated by by its lack of contents.

  Adventures for Any Child
Review created: 09/07/09

I really liked this book because it has some good basic things in it, that all children should enjoy during their wonder years. Every child should experience such a life if at all possible; go outside as much as possible to run & play, gaze deeply into different flowers, examine objects with a magnifying glass, collect objects of interest, consider different textures, safely experiment with cause & effect, & learn how to do basic things such as learning how to tie knots.

I loved how this book gave directions on how to do so many different things! Learning to tie different knots, use morse code, build a tree house, make a bow and arrows, etc. I'd recommend this book to anyone who has a boy (or man for that matter) who needs to get off of the couch and do something!

We had checked this book out of the library and loved it so much that I decided to purchase one for our family. It's 270 pages full of wisdom and wit "from eight to eighty". There is a plethora of "how to's" (making batteries, crystals and bow and arrows), the rules of playing rugby, soccer & stickball. It has sections on Question about the World, Famous Battles, Astronomy, Grammar, First Aid, History, Sports, Poetry, Science, Navajo Code, Latin Phrases....... It is truly an awesome book. As a homeschooler, we can't wait to glean form every page. Some subjects are hilarious, such as the section entitled "Girls", in which boys are given advice on how to talk to girls, behave around them, and so forth. For example: "7. If you see a girl in need of help - unable to lift something, for example - do not taunt her. Approach the object and greet her with a cheerful smile, while surreptitiously testing the weight of the object. If you find you can lift it, go ahead. If you can't, try sitting on it and engaging her in conversation."
This book does come with a parental warning in the front, and rightly so since it has instructions for making batteries, using tools and knives, cooking (which, ofcouse, involves fire). But as you read what this book has to teach, you will come to realize that the boy that comes out at the end will be well knowledged, independent, well mannered, and a better all-around boy (in my humble opinion.
I have two sons, so this book was perfect for our family. I also found a book titled "The Daring Book for Girls" by Andrea J. Buchanan & Miriam Peskowitz that I purchased for my neighbor, who has two girls. It looks just as amazing. Both books are well worth the money (I paid $13 for the set) and mine will be on my book shelf for years to come!
