Dan in Real Life (DVD, 2008)

This fun-spirited romantic comedy is not what I was expecting from Steve Carrell- yet I enjoyed it just the same. We are used to seeing Carrell depict stupidly funny, socially awkward and politically insensitive characters in such films as Anchorman and The 40 Year Old Virgin. And of course he may be known best for his role as the dry-humored, jerk boss from The Office. The character he plays in this film is markedly different. Although some of the same social awkwardness and dry humor still applies, this time his character is also a grieving widow, a responsible father and passionately... in love.

Advice columnist and author Dan Burns has his hands full as a single parent of 3 teenage girls. He was deeply in love with thier mother, who became ill and passed on 4 years ago. Since that time he has devoted all of his attention to his girls and his work and he has not been interested in dating... That is until a chance meeting at a bookstore (while on vacation to visit family) with a woman named Marie (Juliette Binoche). The two have an instant connection- and he knows he is in love. His joy, however, is short-lived once he discovers that Marie is dating his brother... What unfolds is a mix of humor and heartache as Dan attempts to conceal his feelings for Marie and the chemistry they both share to keep peace within his family.

If you enjoy romantic comedies and can appreciate Carrell in a slightly more serious role I think you will LOVE this movie, just as much as I did!

There are very few movies that are worthy of watching over and over. 'Dan in Real Life' is one of the few! It has quickly become a feel good, family favorite.

A movie with lots of humor! The movie takes place mostly in and around this really great old house. The entire family life has a comfy feeling to it. And it would be comfortable watching if it contained no sexual content that, as usual, ruins an otherwise simple funny movie.

This is obviously not a deep noir film, but I think it was a great film none the less. I think Steve Carell is great as Dan and really conveys this huge struggle to successfully raise his daughters while putting happiness for himself on the back-burner. Surprisingly, Dane Cook does a decent job as his brother and actually separates himself from "Dane-Cook-the-comedian" quite nicely. It does have its hilarious moments but it also has quite a few where you just want to cry for Dan. It's a nice balance. I think this is definitely a must for a Steve Carell or Dane Cook fan but really a great movie for anyone.

I was skeptical at first when my wife rented this movie. After viewing it I have come to the conclusion that it is not just your normal "chick flick" as I had been led to believe. It is a relatively serious story with enough comic relief to lighten the sadness of the predicaments and pitfalls of a widower raising three daughters. It is a film of hope and has enough substantive plot to place it among those movies worth seeing again. The deleted scenes are worth viewing and if they were cut to simply shorten the film, they did it a great disservice.
Many of the clips, some only less than a minute in length, would have strengthened the viewer involvement and intensified the climax of the film.
All in all it is worth adding to one's personal film library and is not the type of film to become outdated in the near future. I rate it as good to excellent.

I really liked this movie! It had everything. The humor was great all the way through and the fun never stops. Great for the whole family to enjoy, Steve Carell did it again! He was wonderful in Little Miss Sunshine and he was hilarious in Dan in Real Life! Love the storyline. If you're up for a cute love story, this is it! Watch it!!

Another score for Steve Carell! This very cute and feel good movie will warm the hearts of anyone. Great soundtrack to add to the amazing and always entertaining acting of Carell, with the very funny Dane Cook at his side, who has taken on a less comedic and more fun loving character than usual. An instant hit!
