Cyrano de Bergerac (DVD, 2004, World Films)

I love the story, and I love Gerard Depardieu, but I did not enjoy this movie - to many soliloques (sp?). The same movie made 50 years ago by Jose ______ was much better.

This movie is a masterpiece of film. Perhaps on of the best European films ever. The protagonist, Cyrano, consistently chooses to do what he sees is most heroic, in spite of any obstacle including his own desires. It has excellent action scenes, romantic dilemmas, and leaves the viewer to decide which side of Kierkegaard's "Either, Or" mindset the hero ultimately rests in.

I bought this movie because it is one of my FAVORITES. We're talking top five material here! :) It's a timeless love story about a man who is ashamed to love a beautiful woman because of how ugly he believes himself to be...so he hides his poetry to her behind a man who is better looking. Just watch it. It's incredible.

I had an opportunity once to help in a theatre production of this story. I didn't take the advantage of this experience that I should have, but the production was tremendous.
In comparison with other versions of the story of Cyrano, this one here is in my opinion the most authentic in its emotional impact and historical accuracy. It didn't even dawn on me until later, that the entire script is one big poem; that's how naturally the scenes flow through.
Even if watching this movie while reading the English subtitles, this is definitely a good watch.
