Synopsis
A tragicomic and all-too-revealing collection of essays by writers who have done their time behind the counter and lived to tell their tales.

Like many of us, the writers and humorists in Jeff Martin’s THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS WRONG have held jobs in retail. Here are accounts of workplaces ranging from a beauty spa to Sears, and while there are some that at first would seem like great jobs, such as working in a music store (a fun place to hang out?) or working in an ice cream, there are real horror stories recalled here. Novelist and critic Colson Whitehead contributes his account of three summers of serving ice cream, an experience that made him detest desserts. Perhaps it was the contrast between the customer’s anticipation of sweet treats and the drudgery of the worker behind the counter. Whatever it was, THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS WRONG provides plenty for us to identify with, and might spur us to be just a little more understanding when someone asks, "May I help you?"
