Album Notes CRYSTAL BALL is a 4-CD set of rarities and B-sides. Personnel includes: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Carmen Electra (vocals); Mike Scott (guitar); Kathy J. (clarinet); NPG Horz (horns); Tommy Barbarella, Mr. Hayes (keyboards); Sonny T. (bass); Michael B. (drums, percussion); KAJ, Eric Anest, Keith Cohen (programming); Susannah Melvoin. Bonni Boyer (background vocals). Producers include: Prince, Kirk Johnson, Ricky Peterson. Engineers include: Prince, Joe Blaney, HM BUff. Leave it to the Artist Formerly Known As to continue blazing new trails. Not satisfied with simply being a musical pioneer, he's applied his adventurous spirit to the world of retail, eschewing traditional record company distribution for the 4-disc CRYSTAL BALL set, and instead marketing it chiefly through the Internet. As he casts off the shackles of music business slavery (a process already begun on the preceding EMANCIPATION), he frees his muse to lead him even further on his musical journey. As ever, the man with the purple plan is wildly eclectic and outrageously soulful. He moves from the stone-cold funk of "Hide The Bone" to the gorgeous, elegant balladry of "Goodbye" with such seamless agility that he seems almost schizophrenic in his versatility. While danceable grooves and lustful exclamations abound, there's an underlying spiritual element at work here that gives extra depth to CRYSTAL BALL, and expands our vision of The Artist. Reviews Review created: 03/03/08 by: grneyedgirl31 ( 9 ) I have been a Prince fan since I was a kid. I really enjoyed the songs. It's a must for any Prince fan. Report this review Review created: 12/08/07 by: I'm a Prince fan from the beginning and when this CD was for sale originally, it was about $80 and fan or no, was just too expensive to buy at the time. Finding it on Ebay was a dream come true and I had to jump at the chance...the price was right. And there was peace in the land. Review ID: 10000000004791671 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 01/01/03 by: cdm72 -- a member of Epinions Pros: Better than EMANCIPATION and the BOX SET combined. Cons: Only a few songs I could do without, otherwise there are no cons. The 3-disc CRYSTAL BALL set, originally intended as an internet-only release and then later released in chain stores around the country (thankfully, otherwise I wouldn't own it) is what EMANCIPATION should have been. For that matter, it's probably what the box set should have been, at the very least some of these songs should have made up the third disc there and the "hits" relegated to 1 disc instead of 2. The title song, at just over ten minutes, is the very sound of melancholy, with a little confusion and desperation brought in in the last half. Heavy on the drums and bass with only... The Crystal Ball, his first attempt to release a collection of older music, is a reflective look at tracks that almost made Prince s cut from back in his days with The Revolution up to his days when he was known as a symbol. The Crystal Ball is actually a compilation of bootlegs and near misses that didn t quite make the bar for other Prince releases. It is also Prince s first attempt at an album with online interaction. In that.. Review ID: 10000000000253690 Review created: 01/29/01 by: EFCrow -- a member of Epinions Pros: A great collection of songs that provides answers to questions we've been asking lately. Cons: Production value here is not high enough, and only available on one format. With next to no promotion (the only time I saw it advertised was in an add by Best Buy), and little notice outside of the occasional website hit, I began to suspect that there was new Prince music out there, so I began to call around the local chains to find out if this was true. Sure enough, there was, so I immediately reserved a copy and scrambled to get it together to go down and pick it up. I got to the store, picked it up in the headphone sample booths and listened to the title track, and I was instantly sold. I was disappointed that it was only available on CD, however, and had to go to. The four-CD set was released on Prince's NPG Records label last month with no ornate packaging, no real promotion, no tracklist, no singles and no music videos. In fact, most record buyers don't even know it exists. That's probably enough reason to recommend the Artist take a few correspondence courses in business, but it's only the beginning of the story behind Crystal Ball. In mid-1997, the Artist...
