Album Notes Black Light Burns: Nick Annis (guitar); Josh Eustice (synthesizer); Sean Fetterman, Danny Lohner, Wes Borland (bass guitar); Josh Freese, Marshall Kilpatric (drums). Additional personnel: Johnette Napolitano, Sonny Moore, Carina Round (vocals); Eric Gorfain, Daphne Chen (violin); Leah Katz (viola); Matt Cooker, Richard Dodd, John Krovoza (cello); Section Quartet (strings); Sam Rivers (bass guitar); Charlie Clouser (programming). Issued in 2007, CRUEL MELODY is the debut by Black Light Burns, a group helmed by former Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland, who also takes up vocal duties in the band. More straight-forward than his experimental projects Big Dumb Face and Eat the Day, Black Light Burns is rooted in goth-tinged heavy rock, as best revealed on the hard-charging opener, "Mesopotamia," and the Nine Inch Nails-like industrial number "Lie." In addition to Borland, CRUEL MELODY features performances by NIN contributors Danny Lohner, Josh Freese, and Charlie Clouser, giving Black Light Burns significant crossover appeal with the renowned Trent Reznor-fronted ensemble.
Editorial Reviews 3.5 stars out of 5 -- CRUEL MELODY is still interesting, ambient and, much like its creators, unforgettable. Alternative Press
[The album] sports a confident, catchy gothic alt-rock sound, and Borland stepping up to the mic with an impressively suave vocal performance. Kerrang
