Forsaking the overheated monotony of contemporary R&B singers like Johnny Gill and Keith Sweat, Ali shows that he's done his homework; he's obviously studied the old masters, Al Green in particular. The irresistibly funky strut of "Love Letters" and the lovelorn melismatics of "Tomorrow" both showcase Ali's exceptional melodic sensibilities. While the production is state-of-the-art (this is no '70s retro job), Ali's grounding in the R&B verities ensures that the songs themselves will find a place in listeners' memories. His singing is equally engaging, and he commands attention instantly on every one of CRUCIAL's vibrant tracks.
