Much better than 2, maybe better than 1 as well!

I was a little wary of buying this DVD after watching the horrid Crow 2! I kept remembering, so I thought, that I'd seen a Crow sequel that I really enjoyed, so I took a chance. I was glad I did!
This installment takes place not in a really big city like LA or Detroit as before, but in Salt Lake City. The movie starts out with 21 year old Alex Corvis being sent to the electric chair after 3 years of failed appeals. Corvis was convicted of murdering his rich family girlfriend, stabbing her 53 times. Corvis' contention was that a man with an odd pattern scar on the inside of his forearm actually did it ala "The Fugitive." As Corvis is frying, he sees the scarred man in the gallery. An electrical storm causes a surge that horribly burns his face. After, while lying in the prison morgue, A crow awakens him. He peels away the burned dead skin to reveal the usual Crow mask, only this time it's not clown makeup, but new skin & scars that make the trademark harlequin mask.
As expected, Corvis goes on a rampage to vindicate himself & find the real killers. His pursuit leads him to a band of corrupt cops & also to some very unexpected sources. His vengeful killings are as always quite imaginative & brutal, full of violence & mayhem. There is the usual weird henchwoman to the kingpin who discovers the source of Alex's power, (I really never quite understood the reason for needing this aspect?) but killing the crow is not what temporarily robs Alex of his powers. He is supposedly vindicated & made mortal again only to find out later that it was a trick. I don't really understand how this could possibly happen & it is one of the aspects of the film I don't like. The other is that, unlike the 2 previous films, Alex kills many innocents, in this case, many cops who are just trying to do their jobs. This at least confirms the old adage that "Bad cops kill good cops!" In the end, Alex destroys the bad guys/girl & saves the girl!
Corvis is played by relative unknown, unless you are one of the many fans of the TV series "Ugly Betty", Eric Mabius. Mabius plays the part well being both heartwarming & chilling! We do get a couple of big name actors in this film in the form of William Atherton (best know for the 1st 2 Die Hard movies) who plays Alex's girlfriend's wealthy tycoon father & Kirsten Dunst who plays her sister. Neither has a really huge part in this film, but both end up being very pivotal to the plot. I was disappointed that Dunst did not take up the mantle of the "Grace" character from the previous movie, but after what they did with the "Sarah" character in 2 as opposed to 1, I guess I'm glad they didn't!
This sequel proved to be a much better tribute to the excellent 1st film than the T&A S&M fest that was the hideous "Crow 2: City of Angels!" "Crow 3:Salvation" was just that to the series! An excellent sequel that was more befitting the the theme of the original!
