I love movies about real people. I especially like this movie because it tells the life story of the woman who wrote The Yearling. It was neat to realize true situations that occured during her life that were similar to the writings in her books. I saw The Yearling when I was young and read the book later. Although Cross Creek is somewhat sad it is a wonderful movie as is The Yearling. I can watch them again and again. There are stories that have really touched my heart and will stay forever in my memory!

For those people who like story tellers, this should be your kind of movie. I highly recommend it for younger folk as it shows what life was like in the early 1900s. Beautiful scenery and great acting. A great human interest, self portrait of one woman's life or at least part of her life. Be warned it dose have some intense and very sad moments, especially towards the end. To me it falls in the same category as Out of Africa, Something Wicked this way Comes ect. Hope you give it a chance.

Outstanding performances by Mary Steenbergen and Rip Torn highlight this movie. It's the story of the author of "The Yearling", and her move to the Florida Everglades in search of her own identity. What she finds is a completely different way of life and friendship with the people who surround her. Well worth the time to sit, relax and enjoy this little known cinematic masterpiece. Don't be fooled into thinking it's a "chick flick", it isn't. Character development and scenery are lush and thorough.

I bought this movie due to my interest in the place CROSS CREEK which is only a few miles from where I live. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings wrote the BEST SELLING NOVEL - THE YEARLING and many others from her home there and it stands just as it did back in the 1940's when she lived there. This is a story of her life there.

The movie THE YEARLING was filmed on location in the OCALA FOREST near me.

All the cast does a wonderful job of acting, the beauty and serenity of the area is so wonderfully depicted in this movie.

It's also a great love story - and one that will stay with you a LONG TIME and make one want to come and visit CROSS CREEK!

I live 1 miles north of her house on Cross Creek at Lake Lochloosa, now a museum. Cross Creek was partially filmed from my RV park location. Critical to promoting my business that people see her movie.

A very poignant story about the author of "The Yearling" and her struggles to find the writer within her. She discovers her real talent is in writing about those around her. Until that point she had always felt she had a great gothic romance to write.
This movie is very well cast with Rip Torn stealing the whole movie.
This is actually the story behind Mary Rawlings and her life at Cross Creek. An orange grove and house in the Florida awamps, she purchased for seclusion leaving New York and her husband behind. It is about her contact with a poor backwoods family and their perceptions and dealings with life.
Strongly recommend and the whole family can watch.
I had actually been looking for this movie for quite a while and only recently discovered it on ebay. I might even get a second copy in case something happens to this one.

This movie is very atmospheric! You feel like you are actually following them around instead of watching a film. The score is fabulous and haunting and really stays with you. Wonderful performances by all especially Alfre Woodard! Love this movie!

Great family movie. She wrote some very good books. Telling times of hardship and over coming it, we enjoyed this move very much.
