Not Patterson's Best ...

I am a huge Patterson fan and love most of his books. This is not one of them. Although it maintains the pageturner appeal and I did like the book, there were parts of the story that were just too extreme, too complicated, and a little over-the-top.
Our favorite detective, Alex Cross, finds himself engulfed in capturing one of the most horrific serial killer(s) he has ever come across. It takes him across the Atlantic to Africa where he uncovers issues that become a little overwhelming and becomes a story of its own.
There are many angles in his manhunt, but only after a few chapters, you get the feeling that something isn't quite right about some of the key players and you can start to sense where the story might end relatively early on. It took a lot of self control to not read the last chapter to see if my predictions were correct. But this Pattersonesque easy-read helped me through to the end in 6 hours ... only to validate what I had already predicted.
I was a little disappointed how some murders weren't clearly tied together. Patterson usually offers logical rationales of how and why his psychopaths commited thier crimes, but only a few make sense in the end. I would probably have to read the book again in order to find out why the others happened, but I think I'd rather pass and wait for Patterson's next novel. He cleverly eludes to the idea that we'll be seeing one of his favorite nemesis again.
