Awsome Player TY creative for making a 16m color screen
Review created: 02/25/08

The Zen is an awesome flash alternative to the Vision M. The player has enough storage to store a fairly large library of music with the included 4GB, the player also supports up to 32GB (theoretical) the largest available SDHC card currently being 16GB. The downside is that the players music browser is based on database indexing which does not spread to the card installed in the player, this means that music and media stored on this card needs to be accessed separately from the main menu. For this reason an SD card is ideal for larger videos in which the extra browsing is not often an inconvenience. The new screen is a 16 million color TFT at 2.5" which looks great at almost any angle and is far superior to the 64 thousand color Ipod Nano display. Durability is of coarse also a factor and this player during normal use is very resistant to scratches but certainly not invincible, it is best to keep the unit away from keys or loose change in a pocket as these items will damage the shiny finish on the players surface, the rear seems to be made from an anodized aluminum so it is very hard to damage.

Final Verdict: With great battery life and an excellent price point this seems to be another iPod killer.

Creative ZEN 4GB MP3 Player - A True Small Wonder!
Review created: 01/04/08(updated 01/05/08)
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The Creative Zen is more than an MP3 player, it plays videos, displays pictures and even has an FM Tuner. The 2.5 inch screen is larger than most of the other popular brands of MP3 players. The pictures and videos are displayed beautifully. The audio quality is also great.

The Creative Zen is absolutely packed with features. Besides the standard audio, video and picture playback options, the Zen offers FM radio, voice recording, user equalizer settings and a memory expansion slot. It even offers all the little extras like clock and calendar functions. The Zen is fully capable of syncing with Microsoft Outlook and downloading all your contacts, appointments and tasks, basically adding a daily planner function to your video MP3 player.

The Zen can play the industry standards: MP3 and WMA. But the Zen goes farther and supports audible audio books and unprotected AAC files. The Zen also supports WAV files. There are other players that support these file formats, but they usually require trans coding with special software before they will play. The Zen plays all of these right out of the box. The Zen displays JPEG pictures and plays MP4 and WMV videos, though the player can also support XviD and DivX videos with trans coding through included software. The menu background on the Zen is customizable so you can display your favorite photos as wallpaper. And the player supports album art, giving you visual cues for the music you’re listening to. The battery life is also good, with a rating of 25 hours of audio playback or 5 hours of video playback on a single charge.

All in all, this is a real small wonder! No bigger then your credit card. It has all the features you would want packed into a tiny unit at price that won't break your wallet. The software package is not garbage, really useful for converting movies and such. This also is firmware updatable. Which will keep you up to date with any OS changes or bugs they find in the unit down the road.

PROS: Very compact but has all the features you need. Large 2.5 inch TFT screen that displays brilliant pictures and video. SD Card slot, expand your memory with these very portable SD Cards. They also accept SDHC Cards, just another plus. Sound quality is great. Has all the little extras to act as a daily planner. Nice to have if you need it.

CONS: The USB cable packaged with the ZEN it is only about 5 inches in length. That could definitely have been longer. If you don't have a desktop hub, you might consider grabbing a USB cable extension. 5 inches isn't a lot to work with.

Ive owned them all and this is the best. Perfect size, amazing screen quality and widest format compatibility. Buy as much memory as you can afford. You will want to put everything on it. MP3's Video. Books on tape, Pictures, Audiobooks. TV Shows. It does it all well.

Easy software for synching and trasfer. i even had it working with Itunes. Battery is strong as well.

I strongly recomend this device. Rock on.

Works great and well-endowed with Features!

expansible (and interchangeable) memory, voice recorder, FM tuner, sleek design, price were the top selling points for me... the only down side to this product is accessing the SD card separately from the main ZEN memory, but it is not that big of a deal.

the software is easy to navigate and ZENcast has loads of podcasts from which to choose.

i've had it for almost two months and have no regrets.

At 50, My First Degital Media Player.
Review created: 05/14/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

At 50, I decided to purchase my first Digital Media Player. I wanted to feel up to date with the techno gadgets I see the kids walking aroound with. I was tired of carring a CD player around (who does that anymore anyway)when I ride my mountain bike.

I did a bunch of research and decided on the new Zen 4 gig. At first, I was a little intimidated. How does this dam thing work? Will it be hard to download music files? Do I have to purchase music files off the internet? I mean I never used an mp3 before. And the answer was NO. Within an hour, I was ripping and loading music, downloading video and photos. The sofware is easy to navigate and the quality of this unit is great, especially at $80. The sound is perfect. I feel the headphones are well matched to this unit. It can really get loud if you want. The video quality is very clear with the screen size at 2/3rds the width of the unit. With 4 gigs of internal memory, I won't need an SD card for awhile, but what a great feature. I was around during Vinyl LP's, 8-tracks, cassettes, CD's and now flash memory.

The only bad thing now is that these units and media cards are so small you might forget where you put them, but considering I can put my entire music collection in my pocket, I guess I'll write myself a note (don't want to wash the player if left in my jeans). And now what do I do with all my CD's? I thought nothing could replace them. I guess I'll save them with all the rest of what I've seen change during my life. What's next, implants?

The screen is fantastic. My previous player was exactly the same model, but refurbished from Creative. It completely froze up and I chose a duplicate as a replacement as I love the screen and store almost everything on SD cards. I play videos often so picture quality is important.

Why I bought a used Zen when my old one self-destructed
Review created: 05/04/09(updated 05/05/09)
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

There are a lot of things I like about the Zen. The fact that it's built to be disposable is not one of them; yet, I couldn't face life without it. So, when my 18-month-old 2gb Zen quit working, I jumped on Ebay and found a used 4gb Zen, used, for $40 with free shipping. I bought it immediately and I'm glad I did, although I'm a little bit PO'd that the old one is not repairable. It's designed that way; the battery is not even replaceable without cracking the case open, even if you can find a replacement. So I guess I will have to buy a new (used) Zen every year or two; but at $40, I can afford to!

The Zen is about the size of a stack of (about a dozen) credit cards. It has a bright, clear 2 1/2" screen and gets about 15 to 20 hours on a charge. It has great sound with most earbuds, especially the JVC "Marshmallow" type.

One of the coolest features is the SD card slot. I have a couple of 8gb SD cards (which cost about $30 each, but prices are steadily declining) each of which can hold about 40 CDs worth of MP3s, hundreds of photos, or several movies. Of course, you probably won't watch Hollywood movies on a 2 1/2" screen, and if you wanted to, Creative's video converter app would probably take several days to convert them to the oddball proprietary .avi format this player requires. Short videos work fine, though.

I'm a lover of jazz, funk and jam band music and so I download a lot of MP3s from Emusic.com (at 25 cents a tune). I will never buy DRM-afflicted downloads and have no interest whatsoever in the dreck churned out by the major music companies. The Zen plays MP3s, WMAs and even WAV files, and that's basically all I need it to do. It has a decent FM stereo tuner and a nice EQ (I leave it on the "custom" setting with a bit of bass & treble boost and mid cut, which sounds good with all kinds of music).

TO BE CONTINUED.......

This digital player practically loads itself with songs
Review created: 04/25/09

This player is so easy to use and Creative has built the same great qualities in it that gave them such high ratings in their soundcards. Yes, folks this is made by the same company that first gave us good quality sound on our computers. And with the SD expansion slot built in there is no limit to the amount of music and videos that can be played with this 4GB player, if you run out of internal space simply load it on a SD chip, place the chip in the player and your good to go. The hard part is keeping track of all your extra SD chips. It has a screen as large as most cell phones but better quality than most cell phones. Pictures I have loaded on the Zen look so much better than the same on loaded on my phone which is a brand new Katana eclipse x supposedly the most innovative for music and picture quality. Beats an ipod any day for quality, versatility, and price.

  Not great but not bad
Review created: 03/09/09
by:

I recently bought a Creative Zen 2GB player and had it for about a month and for the most part it worked great. The only problem I had with that one is that it occassionally froze and I had to use a thumb tack to reset it. Unfortunatly this one was lost snowboarding (ironically I had to reset it with a paper clip on the mountain and because of that it fell out while on a run and we couldn't find it in the snow). I then bought another because I liked the one I had before but this one seems to have even more problems. It doesn't freeze like the other one, it just straight up crashes. During random songs the screen will just go black but the power light will stay on and if I try to turn it off it won't do anything. I actually let it sit for 7 hours one night while it was like this and it didn't do anything. Eventually I found a way to reboot the player using the recovery mode but it still is a pain to do every time.

Other than those issues the player is great. There is good sound quality, several preset EQ's and a customizable one too which is kinda nice. Navigating the menu's takes a little bit to get use to but once you do it is really nice to go through them and makes finding songs really easy. The size is nice too, its not as big or bulky as iPods but still has some cool features. The SD slot is nice to if you want to put a lot of songs your MP3 player.

Overall I think this product is a good entry level MP3 player that works great if your not going to be using it all that often. If your someone who is going to use it for more than an hour a day or so then you might want to find a better one but still not a bad find!

I opted not to go for the overpriced Ipod, and settled for the Zen. The Zen satisfies my music needs, and has a bunch more features as well.

I like the slim yet stylish design, although, I have it covered up with a plastic case that I bought to protect the screen. The navigation buttons can be a little unintuitive for new users, but the setup becomes routine after a little experimentation.

I also enjoy not being forced to use Itunes, as with the Ipod.

I don't really care for the song navigation though. I don't think anything can compare to the Ipod's cover flow selection, however, the Zen doesn't provide anything similar. The simple interface looks like an Mp3 player from the mid-nineties.

  Caution research problems before buying!
Review created: 02/13/09

I bought this player a year ago. It was a great size, easy to navigate, great features at a good price. The first month was great. I loaded books, pictures, albums etc. I maxed out my 4G and had a sd card also. But then it happend....The white screen of death. I had read reviews talking about the white screen but never had a problem till I was about two months into using the device. You can't navigate because you cant see the screen. Music still plays but you can't change to anything else. After turning the device off and on again, sometimes it fixed the problem only to happen again in another 10 minutes. A hard reset helped the first few times. Later a reset didn't even help. I researched the issue and found a lot of reporting about this issue with no fix provided by Creative. Now I have a defunct device and had to buy another mp3. Don't be lulled by the fantastic features and size and price. Sooner or later the white screen of death will get you and your device will be useless.
