One of Carl Sagan's most recognized works, "Cosmos" is a treasure-trove of scientific education for both adults and children. It is a fast, easy read filled not just with miscellaneous scientific notes of interest, but with a contagious enthusiasm and wonder that keeps the reader turning the page.
The book is arguably one of the finest primers on astronomy and general scientific discovery you can buy. It is a short, interesting read that covers such diverse topics as the evolution of science and scientific discovery, our solar system, our galaxy and the universe, the complex wonders of the human body, and the scientists and cultures of the distant past and their role in shaping today's understanding of science and mathematics.
Carl Sagan has a genuine and sincere love of science that shines through in his writing. His charming wit and use of the written word entertain even as they educate. "Cosmos" will open your mind to the grandeur of not only our universe, but our planet and even our own bodies as well. The book brings to light numerous facts and figures that will startle and amaze. Most intriguing are the historical aspects of scientific discovery...how Eratosthenes discovered that the earth was round, but the people of Christopher Columbus's time - 1700 years later - still believed the world was flat! How the Dark Ages affected scientific discovery and advancement. How religious persecution affected scientists down through the ages. How the loss of the Library of Alexandria has rippled through the ages, and many, MANY other interesting historical mentions tracing the history of modern science, culture, and philosophy. Also included are two appendices, an extensive list of sources for further reading, and a comprehensive index.
If you read the book, also check out the equally enjoyable DVD’s of the popular Cosmos television series. Carl Sagan is the Bob Ross of science…you and your family will certainly garner many hours of educational entertainment from that extensive and highly-recommended series. And if you like this book, Carl Sagan has an extensive list of other fine titles which you will surely want to check out.
