I would recommend reading the book by David Simon and Edward Burns first, "The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood". However, "The Corner" miniseries is a very well done, and unique blend of journalism and drama. It is produced by David Simon, the same producer of "The Wire" and "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets". This is not for the squeemish, or anybody who wants to just see action. It is an attempt to humanize two largely marginalized groups (drug addicts and young drug dealers) in its following of a family deeply entrenched in the West Baltimore drug culture. It does not romanticize the gangster lifestyle, nor does it make excuses for drug addicts. Simon demonstrates the sadness of this lifestyle, in an attempt to raise consciousness by transforming these lives into art. This is a very compelling miniseries.

For several years I have been interested in the struggle to exist and survive in the innner cities of America.
This series is a very realistic look at the inner city drug culture in a U.S. city. It is a gritty but unflinchingly honest look at the lives of drug addicts who live only for their next fix. Well acted and very realistic.

It Doesn't Get More Real Than This!

If you've ever wondered what REALLY goes down in the drug-infested neighborhoods of Baltimore (and in any such area in the U.S.), this is your taste.

This 6-episode mini-series is gritty, true-to-life, and pulls no punches in depicting the extremely tragic reality of drug addiction and the lifestyle that goes with it. It makes a great discussion-starter with young adults who are going through the harsh realities of drug-life in their own lives and the lives of friends and family who struggle with the realities of drug addiction

One thing I really liked about it was that after the episodes, there are interviews with the REAL people who have been portrayed by actors in the film.

This is the real deal, folks. It is gritty and raw and not for kids. It is about people who struggle day to day to get that fix. Any fix, sometimes! It is what destroyed middle class neighborhoods in Bmore. You feel their pain and thats all there is....Pain. This is not for the faint of heart or the sneering, look down your noses white folks. This is one of the real 'hoods, sad to say!

Just like in The Wire, David Simon delivers real, and too often tragic characters that you really care for. If you like this miniseries, you will love The Wire, and vice-versa. There are no shows like them on TV.

  Prequil to THE WIRE
Review created: 03/06/09

I live in Baltimore and I love this series. It accurately depicts life on the street for a lot of people 10 years ago and even today. Only thing I can say is that its just too short. After 6 shows it leaves you begging for more, thanks god for THE WIRE!

A great prequel to the WIRE

Sets up the story for the WIRE, which i think to be the greatest story telling in TV history. The Corner is a little rougher around the edges and less well balanced, but compulsive watching nonetheless.

Anybody that was a fan of the HBO series "The Wire" this is a must see then. It is from the same writers that created "The Wire" and some would say the inspiration for the series.

A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood
Review created: 05/04/08

It certainly is a vivid presentation of what really happens in the streets and on the corner. The series also has an educational feature to it, in learning how the people cope with life in these situations. The narrator Charles S. Dutton has a good way of starting off each characters dilema and interviews each individual prior to you seeing the way the corner affects their life.
The best scene is when Protagonist Deandre's cousins and fellow drug dealing associates defend their corner on the basis that the night before a washington drug dealer threatens their corner, I was moved to the fact that they chose to play C.R.E.A.M. by the wu-tang clan to aid in the scene. It was the most memorable scene i can remember.
