How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman (1998, Hardcover, Illustrated)

I don't know much about cooking, and what I do know I've learned from Bittman. The book does a great job of explaining things step by step, and coving the basics so that you know the mechanics of the recipes ahead of time. If it is weak, it is only because there are some gaps in it's knowledge; some of the Asian and other "ethnic" foods are americanized quite a bit. Still, you can't beat the number of recipes or the breadth of topics anywhere.

I thought this book was awesome. It had recipes that even I could follow. it also has all the measurements broken down for you or translated, like Imperial,Conversions, Metric,Subsutitutions and Temp. for doneness. I think it`s just a great book. Would also make a great gift for a Newely Wed couple,or just for yourself.

I already had one of these and it's a great cookbook so I bought another for my sister-in-law. Definitely the one I use the most and a great starting place for research if you are trying to learn to cook something new. Most of my husbands favorite meals have come from this book- I especially recommend the pork roast with garlic and rosemary :) There are great explanations of how to cook different cuts of meat and how to put various herbs together. A very good book if you want to learn how to cook as it contains a lot of methodology as well as excellent recipes.

This is a great basic cookbook, with recipes that can be adapted to what you have on hand. A good cookbook to get you started cooking.

the cook book is great. the only thing missing is the section titles on the outside of the pages - which makes it a little more difficult to find what you are looking for.
