Contemporary Diesel Spotter's Guide 1972-
This is an excellent descriptive summary of third-, second-, and modified first-generation diesels by major manufacturers, primarily EMD and GE. I bought it because I wanted a definitive guide to identification and specifications of the prototype and model locomotives in which I am interested. Especially helpful is the information about which railroads purchased and used the prototype engines. I also found interesting the description of some "oddballs" which came about as a result of repowering or "kitbashing" to repair wreck damage. The creativity or inventiveness of shop forces, especially on smaller or cash-strapped lines (including foreign railroads which imported these engines), is quite amazing!
