Dolly Parton once said, "There are really only three female singers in the world: Streisand, Ronstadt and Connie Smith. The rest of us are only pretending." Connie Smith, whose 1964 debut single "Once A Day" went straight to #1, is a country legend--an Opry member since 1965, she's released more than 50 albums and charted 48 country singles. Her first major label album in years finds her reclaiming a genre that, in the '90s, seems to have been overrun by pretty young things with bare midriffs. The album, produced by Smith's husband Marty Stuart, features the kind of traditional country that many fans hunger for, but rarely hear on their local radio stations. Smith co-wrote 9 of the 10 tracks, and they range from honky-tonkers like "You Can't Take Back A Teardrop" to tender ballads like "Your Light" and "Hearts Like Ours." One of the standouts is the most unexpected track: the Celtic-flavored story-song "A Tale from Tahrarrie." Ultimately, what Smith brings to these songs is her voice--a wholly mature instrument, capable of packing years of emotion and experience into every phrase. Wondering where all the "real" country singers have gone? CONNIE SMITH has the answer.
