Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella (2001, Paperback, Illustrated)

This is a funny British book. While it is somewhat hard to mentally convert pounds to dollars - I found that basically doubling the amount will give you a rough idea of the outrageous amounts of Rebecca's accumulating debts! The shops visited by Rebecca may be strange to the American eye - but you can bet they are all pricey! Lost in a whirlwind of shopping and avoiding creditors Rebecca grows up when she realizes she must face up to her debts and make plans to pay them off. Her search for the best way to SL (spend less) and MMM (make more money)are often hilarious. She finds the solution and true love sheerly be serendipity. In the end Rebecca moves from sticking her head in the ground about her addiction to shopping to becoming an adult.

You'll love this book, I did!

Sophie Kinsella's novel, "Confessions of a Shopaholic," is a hoot and- having known one or two people like this, myself- all too realistic. If you've ever paid off one credit card with another, thrown out a bill before opening it, had clothes hanging in your closet or piled in your dresser that you've never worn, or convinced yourself that buying a cart-full of buy-one-get-one free items is like making money, then this caricature novel is for you.

Rebecca Bloomwood, the protagonist, is a recent college graduate who is offered a line of credit by a London bank. Within a few months, she has exceeded the credit limits, and begins stealthily scanning her credit card bills at work, before ceasing to open the bills at all. As a writer for the finance magazine, "Successful Saving," the world of financial management shouldn't be a mystery to Rebecca. In a moment of financial lucidity, she purchases a book- is anyone surprised?- by an expert who advises his readers to learn to appreciate life's less expensive pleasures: parks, museums, and so forth. Yet she considers her first Saturday at the Victoria and Albert Museum a waste. Why? There's no price tags on the exhibits. Eventually, Rebecca's uncontrollable spending, and her "imaginative" solutions for debt control, attract the attention of not only several credit managers, but of handsome Luke Brandon- the 31st wealthiest man in Great Britain and PR representative for a finance group frequently covered in her magazine. But Rebecca is so unremittingly shallow, and Luke is so wonderful, that readers may find themselves rooting for the girl to not get the guy.

"Confessions of a Shopaholic" makes excellent fantasy reading between credit card offers, buy-one-get-one-free sales, and that next eBay purchase. The mirth and mayhem of Rebecca's inner dialogue and her ceaseless scheming to avoid bill collectors- broken leg, dog died, aunt died, bill collector is a stalker- are worth more than a few smiles. The book is great fun and a quick read- well worth a reader's time.

I'm not a big fan of "chick-lit" as a genre, but this book--as well as Sophie Kinsella's other books-- is truly one of the funniest books I've ever read. I couldn't put it down and I immediately purchased her other books, as well.

Rebecca, the heroine, is just hilarious-- justifying her purchases, alternatively ignoring and rueing the financial dilemma she creates for herself. One doesn't have to be in the same economic predicament Rebecca is in to relate to her. A fun, fun read.

This book will have you laughing out loud! I enjoy "chick-lit" as a way to take my mind of things, and this book definately works for that. I identified with the main character as she tried to justify her shopping habit, and then tried to find creative ways to pay for it! If you devour books like me, though, you'll have it finished in an afternoon and be ready for more! Good thing there's three more books in the series!

I heard about this book from a friend at work and once I read it I was hooked! There are four books in the series: Confessions of a Shopaholic, Shopaholic Takes Manhattan, Shopaholic Ties the Knot, and Shopaholic and Sister. Becky Bloomwood the Financial Journalist will take you through the twists and turns she calls her daily life in which she is constantly dodging her bank manager (and several other collectors) with extravagant excuses and get-rich-quick schemes that are sure to have you laughing hysterically!

One of the best fun books there is!!!!! This book is just too funny....... You will want to read everthing she writes..... A must have..... :)

I loved everything about this book, very relatable, fun, couldnt put it down. Loved it so much purchased her follow up book Can you keep a secret. Equally as funny!

We must all join together. The reality of just how easy it is to be just like Rebecca. I definitely don't spend that much on one piece of clothing, but I can spend that much on a multitude of items. It's so easy and yes, the bills come in whining each month. This is a definite must-read and I have already ordered the next in the series. I told myself if this were a movie, I'd want them all in line, so I could watch one right after the other. Thank god for talented writers and continued series!

Many of my friends told me it was a great book. The 1st of many in a series. I also have read several others this author wrote and them great and easy to read.

It is in excellent condition. Im waiting to read it but it appears to be a great book. I purposely didnt see the movie because they movies never do justice to the book.

I must confess this book lacks in entertainment. It has its own path and it fell short of its destination. If you like the movie CoaS dont read this book.

I liked the great collection.
Some of the books were not in great shape though. The original was a bit water logged. I was disappointed.

Becky is just so darn loveable. This book defines chick-lit. It's amazing. Kensella has a gift for making us so addicted to her novels.

Loved this book !! Can relate so well to the need to shop in order to make yourself feel better sometimes in this world !! I went through a period where I could not stop and then when it was all said and done I was overwelmed by all of the stuff I had and needed to clean house to get piece of mind again. Even if you can't relate to the character it is a very funny novel just to take you away from everyday life ....

Before I read Sophie Kinsella's "Confessions of a Shopaholic," I picked up a copy of Remember Me. I was immediately hooked! Kinsella has so much wit that it's almost uncanny. In Confessions, Remember Me, and also Can You Keep a Secret (these are the only three I have read, but I have already purchased all the others!), I read so many parts that literally left me laughing out loud. I can hardly read these in public! She really know how to connect with the reader and her audience. I highly recommend Confessions. Read it before you see the film. If you've already watched the film, read it anyway...you'll most likely like it much more! Kudos to Kinsella.

This series is lighthearted and easy reading!
Great for a distraction when you need one from reality. It's so easy to get caught up in the main characters life and antics.
