The Concert for Bangladesh (2005, DVD)

A "must have" documentary for anyone interested in the evolution of rock 'n roll history. This pretty well marks the reemergence of George Harrison (post Beatles) and Eric Clapton (post Derek & The Dominoes)as dominant figureheads in the rock world. Add Ringo Starr, Leon Russell and Bob Dylan to the mix and you have essentially one concert with all of the necessary musical influences to provide one with the "Concert of a Lifetime". Even more important is the fact that it was in a smaller venue where people actually sat down and enjoyed the music without all of the hassles of rain, no food or water and access to restrooms. Add to that the warm up act of Ravi Shankar and his eastern influence and you have an afternoon and evening of something totally bizarre and, at the same time, incredibly mesmerizing. The remastering of the original soundtracks is superb. The film quality is top notch. You actually feel that you are sitting in the audience during the concert.
Anyone who lived through the time period of this event already knows the significance of this event. Those who weren't born yet should be required to watch this in history class in school. The mere fact that such a musical legend of George Harrison's status would befriend someone with such a request to help a starving nation such as Bangladesh and put up such a effort that continues even to this day is astronomical. I understand that the income from this project still goes to UNICEF to be distributed to help the cause.
Of most importance to me, as a buyer of this product, is the additional disc with interviews from performers of the show as well as additional footage not previously seen. There is nothing more important to a project, such as this, as each individual's own perspective of how he or she became involved and what that meant to them personally.
If you want a real piece of history, discounting the fact that this is a musical masterpiece, buy this box set. Not only will you have something you will watch over and over, you will be helping George Harrison's legacy provide much needed help to a third world country.
