Out of all the best of their post-everything contemporaries--i.e., Wolf Eyes, Black Dice, Animal Collective, No-Neck Blues Band, etc.--no avant, loose-knit collective was as formless as Boston's Sunburned Hand of the Man. The band--unlike their peers--has no stylistic boundaries whatsoever. In lesser hands, this kind of freedom can quickly degenerate into a wanky mess, but with SHOTM, the results are inspired.
COMPLEXION, a live set recorded in Boston in 2004, gets at the heart of their thrilling vision. Although tracks are organized under six titles, each morphs into the next seamlessly in one mesmerizingly meandering statement. Banjo scratches beget lo-fi digitalia beget drum-circle rhythms beget avant-funk beget fluttering noise ecstasy and back again. Their aesthetic is not for everyone, but Sunburned does it better than anyone, and COMPLEXION is the perfect place for adventurous neophytes to take the plunge.
