Album Notes & The Foggy Mountain Boys. Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs left Bill Monroe's band, the Blue Grass Boys, in 1948 to form their own act, and they signed with the independent label Mercury Records. THE COMPLETE MERCURY SESSIONS contains all 28 of the tracks they recorded in their two years with Mercury. Flatt & Scruggs: Lester Flatt (vocals, guitar); Earl Scruggs (guitar, banjo). The Foggy Mountain Boys include: Mac Wiseman (vocals, guitar); Curly Seckler (vocals, mandolin); Art Wooten, Benny Sims, Jim Shumate (fiddle); Howard Watts, Chuck Johnson (bass). Recorded between 1948 and 1950. Includes liner by Rich Kienzle. In 1948, after three years of recording and touring with Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs decided to strike out on their own. The duo signed with Mercury and, over the next two years, laid down 28 legendary sides for the label before leaving to establish a decades-long relationship with Columbia Records. These seminal "mountain music" tracks (Flatt and Scruggs never referred to their music as "bluegrass," believing that the term should apply exclusively to Monroe) all appear on THE COMPLETE MERCURY SESSION. Even the most casual of bluegrass fans knows that Flatt and Scruggs went on to become the genre's best-known and best-selling act. Although super-stardom did not reach the duo until their Columbia years, these recordings demonstrate that all the elements of their greatness were fully entrenched from the moment they first stepped into the studio. Flatt's rolling guitar licks and sweet and homey baritone vocals combine with Scruggs mind-boggling banjo virtuosity to create truly timeless music. The supporting musicians here, nearly all bluegrass legends, include bassist Cedric Rainwater, fiddler Jim Shumate, mandolinist Curly Seckler, and guitarist Mac Wiseman. An absolutely essential CD for any fan of American music.
