Album Notes Magazine: Howard DeVoto (vocals); John McGeoch (guitar); Barry Adamson (bass instrument, bass guitar). Personnel: Dave Formula (keyboard); Martin Jackson, John Doyle, Paul Spencer (drum). This collection features tunes from Magazine's first three albums as recorded live-in-studio for John Peel's legendary BBC radio show. While the band was initially pigeonholed as prog-punk due to expansive arrangements and Dave Formula's atmospheric keyboards, that classification probably had as much to with the contrast to singer Howard Devoto's former band, punk pioneers the Buzzcocks. If anything, there's an added urgency and power on these live recordings that shows Magazine to be no more rococo than many of the more ambitious post-punk outfits of the late-'70s/early-'80s.
Editorial Reviews 4 stars out of 5 -- Saturated with the luscious density of their prog-rock reinterpretations of punk, the songs are less regimented or orchestrated pieces than their studio counterparts. Record Collector
