Album Notes THE COMPLETE 2000 YEAR OLD MAN combines the four comedy albums Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks recorded together between 1960 and 1973. Personnel: Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner (vocals). Producers: Joe Smith, Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Nik Venet. 2000 AND ONE YEARS was recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California on May 26, 1961. 2000 AND THIRTEEN was recorded at The Burbank Studios, Burbank, California in 1973. Includes original liner notes by Steve Allen and Garry George. Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks came of age during the 1950s as key contributors to Sid Caesar's "Your Show Of Shows." Reiner was Caesar's second banana, while Brooks was part of a legendary stable of writers that included Neil Simon, Larry Gelbart and Woody Allen. THE COMPLETE 2000 YEAR OLD MAN is an enduring masterpiece of comic timing and improvisation. This was an era in which comedy moved from vaudevillian set-ups and punchlines, to a more personal narrative style. The outrageously funny recollections which make up these four discs began as ad-libbed routines for the pleasure of their friends. Brooks' Yiddish dialect reflects the lost world of his grandparents, of the East European Jewish diaspora: "...I have over 42,000 children...and not one of them comes to visit,..." he kvetched. In the process, under Reiner's inspired prodding, Brooks' 2000 year old man emerged from the cultural ghetto to become a universal character, and his hilarious, too-close-for-comfort, laugh-to-keep-from-crying observations still ring true--even for listeners a generation or more removed.
