Company of Heroes (PC Games, 2006)

This game raises the bar for all the other RTS's out there. They don't even come close to CoH. CoH did everything perfect. EVERYTHING. The gameplay is great, the sound is the best I've heard in any game, the graphics are amazing(!) if you have the rig for it.

This was the first strategy game I've played EVER! And I don't regret it! If you've never played a strategy game before and are doubtful, don't worry! I was too! I can't believe how I lived without this game :-D!

Best PC RTS Ever

I wanted this game to play and have the English manual instead I got a Tai version that is useless for me.

It took me approximately 12 hours of play time to run through the game the first time. Artificial intelligence of opposing players and allies is dynamic resulting in greater or lesser challenges and varing strategies being applied by allies/opponents. The control panel was unusually large and provided only minimal functionality. I would like to see it's size reduced giving more screen real estate. The video and memory management in this game are the best I have seen. The game does not sit and build memory when in pause (even for hours). There were no difficulties with switching to other applications and no video issues. Installation was likewise faultless.

The game also includes a good number of skirmishes. Approximately another 12-15 hours worth of game time.

While intuitive, I felt that resource management played too great a role in sucess. Exact planning and timing of resouces management trumped strategy in most skirmishes. If one is very agressive about monopolizing resources you will just smother your opponent with assets despite the fact that your war fighting strategy may be less than stellar. Come to think of it maybe this does reflect reality in WWII.

If you are able to get the patches to install, (I had overclocked RAM and had to link/sync them in order for them to work) it should take you around 4 or 5 hours to get all the patches in and the game running.
It looks like a fun RTS, so don't expect Crysis because it's a totally different format.
Just all that darn patching makes me wonder whether the developers originally came out with a finished product.

Very fun RTS game. If you like "Dawn of War" you will love this. Innovative cover system, destructible environments,Units will get better over time if they survive. This is the standard for RTS games.

Bought this game mostly for my 11 year old son. He has played it almost exclusively for 2 months (over the wii and ps2). Even paid his own money to get Opposing Forces.
I am disappointed about the vulgar language - I believe most these games could stay away from the language in all but the most adult games. Fortuntately, the action seems intense enough that the swearing doesn't seem to register.
The graphics to this game are fantasticm, so good that my 8 year old will watch the action over his brother's shoulder (with headphones on). The sound also is perfect. I didn't have any problems with Opposing forces (also patched it) but the computer is pretty good.
I played through tutorial and enjoyed it, but started campaign and found action a little to fast for me (at the time anyway). I play mostly turn-based games (RRTycoon3, Civ and Pirates) so moving to a real-time strategy is an adjustment.
This game is certainly worth the $20 ro so.

Thought it was a single person shooter game, but it wasn't. Loaded it up played some of it, didn't like it so it's on the shelf.

Friend recommended this game and it does not dissappoint. If you are looking for a WWII RTS, this is it!

Its a great break from my regular gaming mode of first person shooters. I like the WW2 idea and not the whole org and goblin stuff you see in the fantasy real time strategy games. Its more realistic if you will, and if your not into that whole fantasy thing but want to play a real time strategy game, this is a good one to try. Id give it a 4 outta 5. I run vista, with all the bells and wistles...ie nvidia gforce 8800gtx 756mb bla bla quad core processor bla bla...the only downer is I had to turn down a few settings due to the game crashing out with all the settings set to Ultra. Great game tho.

Great Fun for a top down military real time sim. Can be challenging at first but well worth the initial frustration when you realize the vital effects of upgrades and combining weapons systems/vehicles to defeat the enemy.

I just want to start off by saying I'm not a huge fan of RTS games, but this one knocked my socks off.
PROS -
Great graphics: The scenery in this game is beautiful. The whole environment is destructible as well. Which means when your guy with the bazooka misses and hits a fence, the fence blows up. You can even zoom up close to the action and swivel the camera to get great screen shots. Sometimes the guys even explode if they are too close to an exploding mortar or grenade.
Incredible sound: Get yourself a good pair of headphones and/or good speakers. The sound is awesome in this game and really makes the experience that much more vivid. From guys yelling commands, to guys screaming in pain, to explosions, to airplanes, it all adds a lot to the intensity.
Singleplayer: The singleplayer is a lot of fun. It almost feels like a FPS as you're playing it. It's also really lengthy. I've been playing for at least 8-10 hours and I haven't gotten through the first 1/3 of the singleplayer campaign. It never seems to get repetitive and is always exciting and fast-paced. The multiplayer is a lot of fun, but with any RTS, I hate having to sit there for so long to finish it out.

CONS:
The game could have left out some of the language. It would be nice if the game was rated T so that other kids could play. I don't like when it's only language that pushes a game up into the M level because that is stuff that could be left out.
Tanks don't always maneuver too well. They sometimes get stuck or just don't listen to you if you give them orders that are even slightly far away. A lot of times I find myself clicking 5 feet in front of them each time and leading them to the spot I want them to be at. This takes crucial time that you need to handle other situations at other places in the map.

That really is a short, insignificant list of cons though. The game is a blast and I'd recommend it to anyone.

This is by far the best WWII RTS game I have played to date. The graphics are superb, the story is awesome, gameplay is just fantastic. The game has a high replay value and the multiplayer is great too. If you want a good WWII game I would take this one first.

Company of Heroes is the best WWII RTS game I have played to date. The gameplay is awesome along with superior graphics. I love the storyline and the character voices. This is a pretty hard game and it also takes a pretty nice machine to run it. I highly recommend this game to any WWII game fan because it is one of the best there it...period.

I thought this game was on the format like "Call of Duty", to be a game of hunt and shoot. Disapointed in that it is a lot slower in terms of action. Also for some reason it isn't compatible with my ATI 9200 graphics card. Vehicals and men supposed to be there but all I can see is the dust from their movements.
This ATI card works great with all other games so it has to be the game it's self. The Internet site I used for undates to correct any problems with the game isn't functioning well either. Their site tells me I need to download a newer flash player 9 but I already have it. So this game isn't able to recognize it. I'll keep working to correct my problem but it is frustrating for now.

Awesome game for any RTS fan looking for strategy as opposed to simple 'mass-attack' games that we are all so used to (Starcraft).

This is one of the best RTS games I've played & I've played a lot. Awesome detailed graphics - intelligent AI - overall balanced gameplay in both single player & multiplayer mode. I played from beginning to end without any glitches or need to download updates - that says a lot about the company that developed the game. All too often games are released before they're ready and developers are issuing critical patches 1-2 days after the game is initially released. This game is a prime example of why PCs are the best gaming platform.

This is an interesting strategy game in which you play on a scaled WWII battlemap directing the actions of 'your company of heroes' against the Germans (or you can reverse your roles and play as the Germans). The game has a campaign which brings you through the Normandy Invasion by playing 15 scenarios in a fixed order or you can play one of the 15 skirmishes that mirror those scenarios. The battles are directed overhead in the 3rd person with you capturing certain strategic points on the map to increase 'purchasing' power which you use to built your units and acquire abilities. The skirmishes can be conducted in an innihilation mode or you can choose to race against a countdown clock for holding strategic points. I thought this game was very well developed and fun to play as it gave you the sense of watching combat unfold 'below' you. The units did need significant direction but the AI micromanaged their behavior for a realistic feel. I have played all the scenarios and ran through the campaign and am still enjoying the play. If you are a WWII game fan, than you will definitely want to have this game.

This is the most realistic RTS game out there so far. The attention to detail is breathtaking with a beefy graphics card. I'm running a Geforce 6800GT with 1GB of HyperX memory and it is great. Although an up to date card will bring up all the visual options at your disposal.

The game play is intense. Units have realistic limitations. For example, machine gunners would just tickle a tank and the rear of the tanks take more damage due to weaker armer there. Units such as the anti-tank artillery, machine gun squads and various directional projected units have an effective range, the farther the target, the less accurate the shots. Building damage is dependent on where it's damaged. You can see your men through the windows ready to shoot. You have to see for yourself how well this game is made. One more thing I like to mention is the camera is full motion. You can zoom down to the face of the solder, and see at his eye level of the battlefield. You can move any way you want like turn, pitch, zoom and rotate.

The game can be even more fun if it lets you have more units on the population limit though... This is a true strategy game in which no one unit can do it all, you have to use strengths of different units against the weaknesses of your enemy. Replay value is very high du to entirely destructible requirements so no two games are ever alike.

I have two computers and i wanted company of heroes on both for lan play. When i found out i could get a good deal on company of heroes gold i jumped on it. Afterwards, i wasnt disapointed.
I played company of heroes without the expansion while waiting for gold to arrive and thought it was "alright" but was missing something. Company of heroes Gold added just what i needed: A good "Defensive" Army. Gold adds two new armies to COH, the british and the panzer elite. Both have defensive and offensive extremes respectively and thats all i could ever ask for in a strategy game.
In conclusion, if you love company of heroes, a good real time strategy, with your choice of an army built to suite your specific needs, then GO GOLD.
