A Story With Soul

This movie is an endearing romp through one man's dream of putting together a local band playing soul music in Dublin, Ireland. It traces the formation of the group, practice sessions and gigs while giving glimpses into the personal lives of the band members. I like the way the film builds not only the story, but the music. At the beginning, the soul sound is thin as evidenced by the slight voices of the backup singers and musicians. But with practice, the girls learn to belt out Aretha Franklin with the best, and the band gains a rich, full sound. Even the lead singer improves as the film progresses. The music makes you want to get up and dance. There is only one drawback to the movie. The dialog is in English, but with an Irish accent which is a little difficult to understand by American ears. It tweaks the brain, but becomes more comfortable as the movie unfolds. Although this is not a Hollywood blockbuster, I found the film complete and satisfying especially when it told what happened to the band members after the demise of the band.
