Through a glass darkly
To understand and appreciate Combat Shock you need the perspective of the young people who made the film at the time. We were all coming out of the Viet Nam era and the horrors of that war were still very fresh in our collective minds. I was in this film and it has taken me decades to fully appreciate the special gift that Buddy possessed as a film maker to so perfectly capture the darkness and betrayal that we as a nation felt at that time. It is unfortunate that so many returning Viet Nam vets met with fates not so different than Frankie's. If you want an uncompromising take on the Viet Nam era, without Hollywood slickness, I recommend this film highly.
