COMBAT! Never Dies.

I purchased the entire COMBAT! Series on DVD and have gotten about 2/3 of the way thru it. It has held up surprisingly well over the years. There are the occasional less-than-perfect episodes, but I can count these on one hand; and that is remarkable odds for ANY series. Vic Morrow's untimely death was a loss to us all. (Fans will never forgive director JOHN LANDIS for his part in Morrow's death-by-mishap on the set of TWILIGHT ZONE in 1981.) The writing is taut and dramatic with great performances by some top industry talent (Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Tom Skerritt, James Whitmore, et. al.). Audio commentary on selected episodes also adds immeasurably to the experience. I also recommend the softcover book COMBAT: A VIEWERS GUIDE that is available on Ebay (29.95 as of May 2008); avoid the overpriced used copies on AMAZON. The notes given on the bloopers/oddities for each episode are drawn from that source. FYI: Dick Peabody (Little John) and Lt. Hanley (Rick Jason) are also no longer with us, but I belive the rest of the squad is still out there "on patrol." Even after SAVING PRIVATE RYAN the acting and action sequences in COMBAT! are still great viewing, esp. the second season in which the special effects highlight the destructive power of the bullets. Excellent production values. COMBAT! gets my Highest Recommendation for a retro series. LS
