Publisher's Note Color will bring life and vibrancy to your very first sketch. Here's the complete Introduction to the exciting range of colored media available today: from water-soluble, graphite, and wax oil pencils and crayons to oil pastels, and ordinary colored pencils. With the help of excellent visuals, best-selling artist and author Michael Warr introduces each, and thoroughly explains which application techniques will give you the most from these tools. Start with superb drawing instructions, demonstrating a variety of creative ideas and simple skills such as stenciling and frottage for any skill level to follow. Move on to landscapes, to still life, and even to figure drawing -- usually reserved for the more experienced. Throughout, a superb collection of drawings reveals the potential of each medium. Every one of your drawings will be a visual, colorful masterpiece.
Industry Reviews Borgeson, author of several books on the subject, is recognized as having helped renew interest in colored pencil as a fine medium. This volume is a revision of her earlier Colored Pencil Fast Techniques (Watston-Guptill, 1988). It fits well in the "Basic Techniques" series, with individual sections on tools, drawing surfaces, etc., giving way to discussions of sophisticated techniques of layering, burnishing, and lifting color. An excellent chapter of studio tips is added. Warr's work strives to be comprehensive but fails for lack of space, and its scattershot style will confuse the beginner for whom it was written. For the novice, Jenny Rodwell's Coloured Pencil Drawing (Studio Vista, 1994) is much more useful. Borgeson's book is recommended for the serious student and will do well in collections that don't already contain her earlier works. Ives
