This book is so touching and you will not be able to put it down! James Mcbride has become my favorite author since I read this story. I bought a copy for all my sisters! It paints the picture of what it is like to grow up biracial in a racist environment. His mother's story is so powerful

  Missed opportunity
Review created: 12/01/06

The author has a compelling story to tell. Unfortunately he does not reveal the whole of it. He is a reporter by training and experience and his narrative reflects that. He lists facts and chronology without delving in to the fullness of the experiences of his characters. One can be sympathetic to the fact that he was writing about his own family and perhaps did not want to tread on feelings by going beyond the facts as he knew them. However, as a reader I found that missed opportunity frustrating. He came so close.

Note: THe average rating is for literature, not for all fiction/non-fiction out there.

  Very Interesting reading.

I enjoyed reading this book a lot. It was certainly eye opening as James McBride told not only his life story, but his mother's as well.

The book was in ok condition. My child needed it for school and I had to take one out of the library because the one I bought took so long to ship. I probably would buy local next time

I love to read non-fiction and the title of this book sparked my interest. The story sounded so interesting I had to purchase it. And it was a wonderful story of a marvelous woman. I buy my books from half.com and have had only good experiences. You can't beat the prices.

Excellent Book!!! A must read Book!!
Review created: 09/04/08

It was a summer reading book for my daughter in high school. I'm so glad I decided to read it too. The book is an inspiration. I am not African American nor Jewish, but I feel that the writting in this book applies to all mixed/interacial families and their struggles to fit in the community. The author explains everything so well, at times I found myself crying. I wish they had included more pictures so I can put a face to the names.
I loved the book, I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book.
Thank you Mr. Mcbride for such a great book!

Bought this for a book club. I did not end up reading it, but my husband did. He said it was a good book which is a pretty good review from him considering he is not a fan of memoirs.
