I bought this book because of an interest in "history's mysteries", but found much more. Diamond gives us a very objective look at not only what caused ancient civilizations to fail, but at the various forces at work in our current civilizations and decisions that must be made for our own success or collapse. It deals primarily with environmental issues, but not to the exclusion of societal and cultural interaction. I found this book to be very informative and eye-opening without the "alarmist" rhetoric of so much of the genre. Recommended reading for anyone with global environmental concern.

  A good read for class

I bought this book because I was charged with reading it for a college course class. The book was very interesting and made me wonder on how we, as citizens of the United States, may be pushing ourselves to a formidable yet preventable national collapse. The book gave many historical and current examples of what we can now expect to happen in our country. What i did not particularly like was the repetition it fostered for the subject; if you can bear with it, it is a very essential book to look into.

this book tells you how past societies have in many ways destroyed themselves. the author compares societies from different places and eras around the world to let us know that maybe we at this momento are at risk of destroying ourselves.

I bought this book because Diamond's previous book, "Guns, Germs, and Steel" was required reading for an advanced anthropology course. His in depth discussion of societial collapse and broad research base provides an excellent glimpse into the mysteries of the successes and failures of past societies. Diamond takes an unbiased analytical approach to both past and present societies and gives interesting conclusions about the causes of both environmental and social pressures. Using these examples, Diamond gives a haunting warning to today's First World mega powers and the issues that we all face today. An excellent read for anyone interested in history, anthropology, geography.

  Collapse, by Jared Diamond

My ethics college instructor considered this required text. I did save quite a bit buying this as a used paperback rather than new and would recommend to anyone looking to buy this book to buy it used (with all the necessary precautions of course). Nothing is lost when purchasing it in paperback form as far as content and you save $$$. It is an excellent read. Jared Diamond is a great author.

Great book on Failed societies and Sustainability
Review created: 05/09/09
by:

Diamond divides the book into sections about certain societies throughout history. I have read the parts on the Anasazi, Easter Islanders, Norse, and China. For each part, Diamond draws heavily on research from himself and others with real evidence to suggest how each society failed.

Not only is this book very informing, it also draws upon the larger questions about how we should all conduct ourselves today. It teaches us what to consider in sustainability practices so that we don't follow the same way.

It's definitely an interesting read, but sometimes it can be overbearing with the depth and details Diamond provides. This is good though I think, because it prevents us from making hasty assumptions and connections.

Fascinating, astonishing book, containing reams of research and vast erudition to link ancient collapses of civilizations to modern environmental crises. This is one of those works you run around recommending to friends and pondering for a long time after you put it down.

I love to read books about the different societies that make up our world. Someone told me this book would make excellent "airplane reading". Since I travel to China regularly I needed a paperback version (lighter to carry). Shopping in a book store always leads me to spend more money than shopping on ebay. The book was very interesting and it actually lasted the entire 14+ hours it takes to get to the other side of the world.
