Cold Mountain (DVD, 2004, Special Edition)

Ada Monroe (Nicole Kidman), Inman (Jude Law), and Ruby Tuewes (Renee Zellweger) are the principal characters of this epic story in the little mountain village of Cold Mountain, North Carolina during the Civil War. Ada has just moved to Cold Mountain from Charleston with her preacher father (Donald Sutherland). Inman is one of several workers on his new church. There is an almost immediate attraction between Ada and Inman. But then the war breaks out, and every grown man must enlist and go.

The story revolves about Inman's impossible attempt to return to his newfound love, Ada. He endures so many tragedies including:
(a)the battle of Pittsburg where he barely escapes and deserts the Confederate army.
(b)a preacher (Philip Seymour Hoffman)who was attempting to kill his black, pregnant mistress
(c)Southern bounty hunters who are pursuing deserters and lock him up with others in a chain gang.
(d) an old woman who has nothing to live on and finally kills her last goat right on the screen for us to see
(e) a young widow (Natalie Portman) with a baby who befriends him but then is raped by passing Yankee soldiers.

Meanwhile, Ada, who has never done anything that a lady would not do, is confronted with running a farm with practically no food and no help. Enter Ruby Tuewes, who has the ability to completely run a farm. The two are a team and together make it with lots of blood, sweat, and tears during the war years. But there are interruptions by scalawags that would like to marry Ada and then Ruby's father returns out of the blue--a deserter that gets them in trouble because they have protected him.

The movie ends on a bittersweet note but with hope for the future, as most war movies do. And Inman does make it back eventually.

Renee Zellweger is the real star of the movie. She played the tomboy Ruby to the hilt and won Best Supporting Actress of 2003. Once she enters the story, she takes over in a character that she has never played before. She is totally into this role, and I was very impressed by her performance.

Nicole Kidman and Jude Law were both nominated for the main acting awards but did not win. They were remarkable in their roles as well. The movie also was nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Scoring. Two songs from the movie were nominated--"Scarlet Tide" and "You Will Be My Ain True Love", but neither won.

An extra disk of special features is included with this DVD, and if you are interested in mountain music, it explains how it came to be and thrives today.

this movie was thrilling all the way thru... excellent acting,,,beautiful scenery.....only ended different than I had hoped....I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next... so realistic...so glad I finally got to see this movie

I decided to purchase this movie after having read the book. The book and movie are excellent!! This DVD was a great buy, It has 2 discs, lots of extras. I would highly recomend It.

This movie is destined to be a classic. It is historical fiction done the right way. The characters are three dimensional and completely believable. It has an eerie quality at times but leaves you with the feeling that nothing is accidental, everything has a purpose, and life is not without meaning. It is similar to the Lonesome Dove series (and real life) in that no character is sacred and it is difficult to predict what is going to happen.
It will make you laugh and cry, then leave you with a heart full of hope.

Excellently done. Profound in its realism and simplicity. This one will keep you captivated until the end.

I liked it so much I wanted to have a copy to see when ever I wanted too it's excelent and compared to the movies I saw this year they suffer by comparison.
Not really for kids 13 or under. It has some unnerving sex.

Jude Law is so incredibly (HOT) fascinating in this movie.

All the academy awards for this film tell the whole thing! I was originally struck by Zellweger's performance, and still am! This is a film that the
family will pull out of the stack and view over and over, for the attention to detail assures that you will generally see something you didn't see the last time you watched it.

This movie is an emotional rollacoaster ride. Buy a box of kleenex because you will need them. The civil war fighting scenes are amazing and heartbreaking at the same time. The love between the two main characters portrayed by Jude Law and Nicole Kidman will take your breath away. I recomend this movie to anyone.

I bought this movie, thinking it looked like a great movie. I do like to watch historical movies set in any time. I just did not like this one at all. I think part of the problem was Nicole Kidman. Renee Zellwegger did a great job in the movie. I did think it had a good story line, but just not what I expected, I borrowed the movie to a friend of mine and she really liked it, so I gave it to her. But as the rest of the reviewers said they all liked it, so don't take my opinion to highly, I just wanted to add my thoughts.

Cold Mountain is set during the American Civil War and is essentially a love story of a soldier who spends the better part of the war trying to get back to the girl he left behind. Jude Law is a confederate soldier from North Carolina who falls for Nicole Kidman, a minister's daughter, right before leaving to fight the war. Law later deserts the army after the battle of Petersburg and works his way back home to Kidman, enduring many hardships and perils with only her in mind. The music, cinematography and acting makes this movie a very good one to see if you like a good old fashioned romance. The period soundtrack by artists such as Allison Krauss and Jack White adds much to this film. Recommended.

Beautifully and poetically written script that is rare in capturing the ugliness that the Civil War was (at home and on the battlefield), rather than using a glossy Hollywood misrepresentation as a backdrop. A Deeply moving tale that does its author proud. The story is at once historical, graphic, hisotically correct, magical and mystical -- a condition well served by the incredible talent and stellar performances of Nicole Kidman, Jude Law and Rene Zellwegger. The remarkable supporting cast wraps, like cotton, around the core characters filling the screen and the heart with an incredible story of war,longing and the power and infinity of love.

I like this movie so much I bought the book and the audio book and the DVD and enjoy them again and again. Like Private Ryan it is not a happy story but somehow takes me to a place where life is meaningful and has a purpose and good wins out after all. Frasier's writing and the performances in the movie are outstanding. I hope he can continue with this level of quality.

CD is perfect. The only down side was waiting for it to arrive from China, therefore I feel I will keep my business inside the US boundaries.

It was very good had great quality! I Loved it very much I listen to it almost everyday and I know all of the songs now!

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I watch it everyday, especially when i'm feeling down! It cheers me up. The characters are believable and the actors who portray them are phenomenal. I would describe it as the sweetest, most tragic love story ever. I really connect with the era. The producers did an outstanding job of reproducing the time period, paying attention to the smallest of details. Nicole Kidman and Rene Zellweggar play extreme opposites and yet they compliment each other and despite there differences form a strong friendship. Know one could have played a better Mr. Inman than Jude Law. He made you feel every emotion he was experiencing. Nicole Kidman narrated and I think that really added to the ambiance and the incredible story that it was. Also lending itself to the ambiance was the breathtaking landscape. I hope in the near future to visit the site where this film was shot. I strongly urge anyone with the smallest of hearts to see this movie as soon as possible!

All the performances are outstanding by this talented cast. Drama and romance all wrapped up into one.
A movie well worth watching.

This is one of those movies, that you can watch over and over. I believe anyone who watches it will have to agree. Kidman, and Zellweger are great. Rene Zellweger, is a very versatile actress, she makes this heart warming drama, comical as well.

I bought the Cold Mountain DVD and was very impressed at the condition that it was in. It was brand new still sealed just like it would have been if I had bought it from the store. Overall the seller did a wonderful job.

Loved this movie with a passion. Beautifully orchestrated love story, delivered from a pre-to-post war perspective.

A bit of a chick flick-though I am a woman-so there! :)
But any REAL man out there would defiantly appreciate this movie!
