Like the previous reviewer, I had read the book and loved it.This can sometimes lead to my screaming at the TV "Why change it? The book was better!", but this is a very faithful version, and quite hilarious. Why on earth the BBC decided to release it only in USA video format,I cannot imagine, but it's worth the hassle of getting a DVD version made, as I did.
As an "If" world it's lovely: transport by private plane rather than car is just one example.
It also gives viewers the chance of seeing well known actors (Brian Blessed, Peter Egan ) in their youth : Peter Egan's verdion of a belly dance has to be seen, but you might need a cold shower afterwards!
Altogether a great version of a very funny story : I cannot imagine anyone watching it without laughing hysterically at least half the time. And one can spend hours wondering just what was in that woodshed....Lizgage1950

) I had thought about this production for many years. I had bought the book, read it and thought it was hilarious. I saw the Hollywood re-make when it came out, but there was no comparison to the BBC production that I saw so many years ago. One crazy night I decided to look on e-bay and, lo and behold!There it was in VHS in Hawaii. I had to have it. It has stood the test of time with the characters and the fine actors; wonderful, audacious, humor,as only the Brits can do. There is nothing funnier than a family that accepts the matriarch of the family, who has not left her room for years, and only response to communication is "I saw something nasty in the woodshed".I will always be grateful to the vendor who provided me the opportunity to own this treasure.
