  Wonderful Irons

I purchased new irons at the beginning of the season, Callaway Big Bertha 2006. I started using Cobra woods and loved them, so I ended up purchasing these new irons - Cobra S9's. These irons have a slightly closed face, just like the drivers, so I thought I'd try them.

The look great, they feel great, and the slightly closed face helps me close the face faster and ends up helping me hit a draw.

Great clubs.....I made a good switch.

If Your Handicap is 10-20, buy the Cobra S9 Irons

These clubs are easy to hit and perform in all conditions and from all lies. Their look and appearance facilitate proper alignment which leads to confidence and ultimately good shots. Esthetically, I like the color scheme of the iron cavity backs and shafts. I chose these over Ping G5 and the many Taylor Made iron sets because they perform much better. Only drawback: the soles and iron faces seem to scratch easily, even off the fairway. But, when they hit straight and far, you can overlook that.

  Cobra Golf Iron Set
Review created: 03/05/07

For thirty years I have made golf clubs for myself and others. However, this year I saw the Cobra S9 clubs and immediately fell in love with them. They were similar to the Callaway Fusion irons I had been looking at but looked cleaner/nicer. I figured this to be my last set of irons and I could afford to pay retail so I priced them at the local dealer. Golf clubs are like cars -- Once you drive them the depreciate quickly. Much to my amazement I saw the set I purchased on eBay and was able to get them for $300 less than new. This set had only been used for several rounds and some of the clubs had never been hit. To have bought a near new set of clubs at 40% below cost was great. I am playing with them now and enjoying every swing.

  Huge Upgrade
Review created: 03/16/07

I had been playing with the same set of irons for about 15 years and decided it was time for an upgrade. I went to a retailer so I could hit a bunch of different clubs and see which I liked best. I tried the latest and greatest from Ping, Calloway, Taylor Made, Nike and these Cobras and by far hit the Cobras the best.

The forgiveness of these clubs is unreal. Even when I know I mis-hit it (which would have been duffs or shanks with my old irons) the ball often still lands on the green and at the very least just missess.

The look and feel of the clubs is great and I am about 1 club longer than with my old irons. I am about a 15 handicap right now, but that is steadily dropping since I upgraded every club in my bag in the last 6 months.

The Cobra s9 iron set is fantastic. The great swings are great and the bad swings are about 90% great. You don't lose much distance on your off swings. They are easy to hit and highly recommended by me( a 3 handicapper ).

  Cobra S9 Senior Shaft
Review created: 12/12/08(updated 07/12/09)
by:

These irons are long, forgiving and solid. Ball flight is high. Top line is thin enough to be esthetically pleasing. I just bought a second and third set to keep in Florida and at my summer house. I am using senior shafts, and right now I playing to about a 13 handicap. I use the 6 iron thru sand wedge and use hybrids for my 3, 4 & 5 irons. The senior shaft is not so soft that it cannot be substituted for a regular shaft, even if your swing speed would tend to dictate a shaft stiffer then a senior shaft. These things have a great feel with the low kick point of the light senior shaft; and I don't see any loss of accuracy from the softer shaft. In fact, the senior shaft helps me to tone down my swing speed, as I don't feel like I have to hammer it to get the distance I expect.

  S9 Irons ~ Simply Magnificent
Review created: 08/17/08(updated 08/17/08)
by:
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Here is what I have learned playing these clubs:

1. Outrageously straight -- the ball goes very far and very straight with these clubs.
2. Nippon steel is stiff is simply awesome. I mean CRAZY good. I hate the weight and lack of feel in the DG S300's. This shaft almost feels like a Hyrbid steel/graphic shaft. It offers the best of both worlds. I cannot say enough great things about the Nippon steel in stiff. I am amazed.
3. You need to like a large soled club. If you already play a really shallow angle into the ball, these clubs may not work as well as other forged type club soles. If you are standard or somewhat steep, these are awesome.
4. The club hits an automatic draw with the standard weighting. If you want to hit a fade, you HAVE TO lead with the heel of the club into the ball to even hit a slight fade. No, you are not going to get a fade like you had with your Ram Tour Grinds or Hogan Apex irons (the 2 sets I started playing with).
5. The grips (Tour velvet D50 grips in .600 diam) are awesome. Perfect match of feel and firmness. Unfortunately, the NEW D50 grips on the NEW S9 --II (2008) irons are a little more tacky and rubbery. Still good, but not as good should you have to go regrip.
6. The LOB wedge in this set (stiff steel) is SNEAKY awesome. Great feel for such a large club. I like it better than my Vokey Spin Grooved wedges b/c it is so darn forgiving around the green.
7. Over a decade ago, I "found" a set of graphite irons called the Mizuno T-Zoid T-3 irons (the one with a titanium insert face). Those clubs were SO good for SO long, I never thought I would fall in love with another set -- until I played the S9 irons (generation 1).
8. I have not played the new S9 (2008) model yet -- no opinion there.
9. Hands down, the BEST value in irons on planet earth. A phenomenal amount of technology, distance, straightness and feel in a players' iron. Just for fun, some of my friends who are scratch golfers hit a few balls with them. Were it not for their pride in moving away from a Mizuno blade, they would switch tomorrow.
10. I only play the Lob and Gap wedge. These clubs go so far, you may not need either the sand or gap wedge. The lob (60 degrees) is a critical addition.

Have fun. Play well.

SB

I am an 11 handicapper and play about 3 times per week. These are terrific irons with excellent shafts. I use the Reglar graphite shaft. What I most like is the feel of the clubs. When you hit a pure shot, you know it. They are also forgiving when you are a bit off center at contact. I really don't have any negative comments.

  Cobra S9 Graphite Regular Shaft
Review created: 11/07/07

3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Tried my new set (4-PW+GW) today. 10 Handicap.

I switched from stiff shafts to regulars which was some initial concern for me but no problem.

I thought the heads were going to be bigger but they looked fine. Hit them on the range first and they seemed to be about a 1/2 club longer than my old irons.

Won 3 out of 4 closest to's with a group of 15 golfers, which was great.

Shot my usual 77 which was good with new irons.

I need to look for SUPER GAME IMPROVEMENT Woods now.

Cobra S9 Iron set 5-GW Steel Regular Flex
Review created: 03/09/08
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I can't say enough about these irons. They are so forgiving it makes golf almost easy. Even my mis-hits still go 3/4 of the normal distance and straight. I was a 14 handicap last season, i'm sure that'll be dropping to a 12 or 10 this season. They are the best game improvement irons i've hit this year. I tried the new callaway lineup and the nikes and taylor mades (r7s are junk) and the cobra S9s beat them all in looks (they're the sharpest club i've seen this year) feel, performance, and value.

I paid 220ish for the 5-GW in damn near new condition and that was a steal.
I wasn't worried about the 4 iron because I play cobras DWS hybrids (2r and 4r)

If your interested in them, BUY THEM, YOU'LL LOVE THEM!!!

Cobra S9 II 2008 Irons Steel Reg Shafts Std Lgth Loft
Review created: 02/10/09
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you check reviews, Cobra S9s are renowned for high ball trajectory and ease to hit / forgiveness. Having tried my set for 5 range visits now, I can fully agree.
If, like me a mid handicapper, you have a fairly reliable swing, then likely your average S9 shots will travel very high indeed and as far in distance as top 10 percentile hits achieved with most conventional irons. Of course there is less roll with steeper landing - and sometimes I honestly have trouble to track where ball flight at follow through - it arcs up so much higher.
The weight bias and curve on base of clubhead took me few hours to fully adjust to at address, and there is a perceptible change in overall feel during shots (less feedback compared to std cavity irons). But these are small nuances to discuss when the main point is eventual consistent distance and very acceptable results even on pretty awful mishits - ones which my old irons would have punished without mercy. Also less feedback comes with a major plus - decreased vibration and judder.
I have a fast swing and fully enjoy these clubs. I would like to see how they go with stiff flex next time around. Perhaps these S9s would produce most noticeable improvements in slower, more fluid swinging golfers.
Overall, with S9s you should quite quickly gain the confidence to pick any iron in the bag and trust that you will connect well very, very often indeed. This is extraordinarily fulfilling, as is the near silence these irons produce when struck sweetly. High wedges produce backspin for me on such occasions.
My advice to anyone using these: Take it steady, make sure you really follow though on your swings, don't try to knock the skin off the ball as you will lose ability to predict yardage, and tee up low if at all. Cobra S9s will then add a new and very enjoable dimension to your game.
Happy Golfing!

Having used Cobra drivers for the last few years, I decided to give their irons a try. I was able to acquire a nice set of used S9 irons in steel, regular flex shafts. Once I got the grips changed to the midsize I like, it was off to the range. Ball after ball, gently drawing back to center 10-15 yards further out than before. Ok, it's the range...not a great indicator of course play, right? WRONG! Dead on. These clubs work and work well with my swing. They forgive mishits, sure, but the true benefit comes from a sweet-spot hit...long, wonderful trajectory, accurate. I've knocked a couple of strokes off my handicap already, and expect to continue to improve. Confidence inspired by using the proper tool leads to better shots. Try them...you'll see.

I am a low-handicap golfer and have been playing for over 40 years. These are the best combination of feel and forgiveness in irons I have used. Off center hits feel solid, with very little loss of distance or direction. Solid hits are long with a high trajectory. A superb all-around iron choice.
