Here is what I have learned playing these clubs:
1. Outrageously straight -- the ball goes very far and very straight with these clubs.
2. Nippon steel is stiff is simply awesome. I mean CRAZY good. I hate the weight and lack of feel in the DG S300's. This shaft almost feels like a Hyrbid steel/graphic shaft. It offers the best of both worlds. I cannot say enough great things about the Nippon steel in stiff. I am amazed.
3. You need to like a large soled club. If you already play a really shallow angle into the ball, these clubs may not work as well as other forged type club soles. If you are standard or somewhat steep, these are awesome.
4. The club hits an automatic draw with the standard weighting. If you want to hit a fade, you HAVE TO lead with the heel of the club into the ball to even hit a slight fade. No, you are not going to get a fade like you had with your Ram Tour Grinds or Hogan Apex irons (the 2 sets I started playing with).
5. The grips (Tour velvet D50 grips in .600 diam) are awesome. Perfect match of feel and firmness. Unfortunately, the NEW D50 grips on the NEW S9 --II (2008) irons are a little more tacky and rubbery. Still good, but not as good should you have to go regrip.
6. The LOB wedge in this set (stiff steel) is SNEAKY awesome. Great feel for such a large club. I like it better than my Vokey Spin Grooved wedges b/c it is so darn forgiving around the green.
7. Over a decade ago, I "found" a set of graphite irons called the Mizuno T-Zoid T-3 irons (the one with a titanium insert face). Those clubs were SO good for SO long, I never thought I would fall in love with another set -- until I played the S9 irons (generation 1).
8. I have not played the new S9 (2008) model yet -- no opinion there.
9. Hands down, the BEST value in irons on planet earth. A phenomenal amount of technology, distance, straightness and feel in a players' iron. Just for fun, some of my friends who are scratch golfers hit a few balls with them. Were it not for their pride in moving away from a Mizuno blade, they would switch tomorrow.
10. I only play the Lob and Gap wedge. These clubs go so far, you may not need either the sand or gap wedge. The lob (60 degrees) is a critical addition.
Have fun. Play well.
