I started playing with an original set of (King) Cobra irons circa 1985 made long before they were acquired by Acushnet/Titleist(et al). I hit the CB Carbon irons at our Cobra Demo last week-end here in Colonie, NY and have 2 observations about these irons:
(1) on a scale of 1-10 they are a 9.5, near perfect in feel, balance and shape. I do not agree with the factory hype that they are for "the better player". They are for anyone who understands how to properly swing an iron and how to hit a ball out of their own shadow. With these irons to start with any player regardless of ability is going to improve faster and enjoy doing it without all the hype about "forgiveness" and "sweet spot size."
I've been hitting graphite shafted irons for a while(I'm an "old guy", 58) so those Dynamic Golds revived a lot of pleasant memories, being a good shaft for these heads that are sweet and confidence-inspiring, hardly the touchy or easy to mis-hit irons that some better players grumble about like the Titleist, Mizuno or Hogan "pro", or the "better player" PING s5 models.
I didn't care for the Cobra factory grips but that's no big deal, is it? I didn't like the Nike factory grips either but they are still on my woods.
(2)if I did not already own two identical sets of Callaway X-12's (2 homes 3600 mi apart) I'd be buying a set of Cobra CB's on EBay next week. They feel superb, you can work the ball with only subtle swing and /or grip adjustment UNLIKE my Callaway x-12's which are a superb iron for the motivated 20 hcp hacker I used to be. I improved my game using them, no complaints.
THe Cobra CB's ARE "cavity backs", blade-small heads with a delightful thin top-line with solid feel and feedback on every swing. THis is a precise head to hit if you are focused and looking to score and playing with your A game on.
Last note: I noticed surface rust in the corners on most of the iron set I hit which is explained (perhaps) by this higher carbon content the Cobra folks are rapping about as part of the 'soft' feel. Remember that old chef's knife (which you probably wish that you had kept years later) that you could sharpen to a razor edge with just a few licks of the stone got rusty, too, but it sure cut like the dickens!!!! Anyone who objects to your spotty clubs on the course you should probably trade in for a new single player at the turn....
