29 LTD: The One The Truckers Use
Review created: 09/23/06

59 of 64 people found this review helpful.

The Cobra 29 LTD has, literally, always been The Trucker's Choice in Mobile CB Radios - and this Trucker has owned several over his career. The 29 LTD is a heavy-duty unit, built to take the punishment of the trucking environment. It is not a Base unit, as it comes out of the box, although many people do couple a power supply with it and use it as a base station.

The 29 LTD has been around since the 1970's, in various incarnations - originally known as just the 29, and later 29 LTD. Other variations on the basic radio usually involve additional features, and added letters in the model designation - such as WX for Weather Radio reception, NW for NightWatch (backlit faceplate), and ST for SoundTracker (static reduction technology) - with the ultimate model being the 29 LTD WX NW ST (both a mouth full and a faceplate full) combining all these technologies.

One key to the 29 LTD's continuing success, is the space available inside the case for aftermarket add-ons, of which there are plenty (available at CB shops across the country). Among the most popular are an Echo/Reverb board (commonly called a Connex Board) which allows adjustable improvements in the sound of your voice - and Talkback, allowing you to hear your output level through the speaker, much like the feedback you get in the earpiece of a traditional telephone.

In addition to those two add-ons, I recommend a premium Noise-Cancelling Microphone, such as the Telex/Turner Road King 56 (another Trucker's Favorite) - and a high-quality Extension Speaker, such as the Barjan PROnouncer, or Cobra's own S100/S300/S500 series. (The S500 allows you to have the Talkback feature without having internal work done on the radio).

It is possible, with the 29 LTD as a starting point, to spend a fortune on add-ons and modifications - some legal and some illegal. Having tried many of those myself over the years, I do NOT recommend many of them, especially the illegal power boost mods that many CB shops peddle. The package that I have laid out - 29 LTD, Echo/Reverb board, Talkback, Telex mic, and good Extension Speaker, plus a good quality Antenna and Coax - will set you back a total of $200-$250, and makes a solid performing package that will serve you well for many years to come.

  A good radio all arround
Review created: 09/29/06

37 of 41 people found this review helpful.

This CB radio has all the basic functions that you would expect from a good CB radio. Cobra radios are longlasting and performing. I would recomend this radio to any person that would like a good radio without the need of SSB. The radio has also some things that are not as good. Please pay atention to the place it was made, the best ones are the old ones.
The newer cobras are made in china and the traditional long lasting radio has come to an end.
Also be concerned that since it is well build you can get a good used radio for less than half the price than a new one, and most of the times the old used radios last longer.
To identify the newer ones from the old ones is easy. The old ones have the mic connector on the side while the new ones on the front.
Hope this helps new buyers.

  Cobra 29 LTD MODS
Review created: 07/13/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

29 LTD CLASSIC:
Change final to 2SC1969.
If the driver final is a 2SC2029, change it to a 2SC1957. Some radios
come with this driver already installed.
Change R123 to a 0.47 ohm resistor. Do not jump this resistor because
it could overdrive the final.
Change R58 to a 2.7 ohm resistor.
Replace D8 with 2 1N5817 diodes. One on top of the board and one on the
bottom. This will prevent voltage spikes between the driver, final, and
modulation transformer.
Change C71 to a 33uf 25v. electrolytic capicitor.
Place a 47pf disc cap across C57
Place a 47pf disc cap across R55
Adjust L17, L20, L21, L16, and L14 for max RF output.
Do not cut D11. This will cause over modulation. Adjust VR4 for
optimum modulation. No more than 110%
Adjust L12, Sometimes stretching gets a "little" more power.
========================================================================

CARRIER MOD (required for amp):
Remove JP36.
Solder a 220uf or larger 25v. Electrolytic capicitor in the holes,
negative side to final.
Cap with 50 to 100 ohm 1 watt resistor.
The lower the resistor value, the higher dead key will be.
=========================================================================
VR1.....Recieve gain
VR2.....Signal meter
VR3.....Squelch
VR4.....AMC
VR5.....Transmit power meter
VR6.....Antenna warning light
L11.....TVI trap-DO NOT ADJUST!
=========================================================================
RECIEVE BOOST:
If D17 has a resistor (8k) soldered to it, remove it. Solder the diode
back to the board. This is only on the newer models.
Locate pin 14 of the PLL.
Install a 22k-220k ohm resistor between these two points.
The smaller the value, the more the recieve is boosted.
Mine is wired into my bright/dim switch. you can add a small toggle switch
if you desire. I highly recommend a switch. If you are talking to someone
close, you can't understand them unless this is disabled.
If your recieve audio is weak, check R31. Replace it with a
1/4 watt 47k resistor.
==========================================================================
VARIABLE POWER:
Remove JP36, VR4, and C73 (near the final).
Desolder the orange and brown wire from the RF Gain Controll (RFGC).
Solder the wires togather to restore recieve.
Solder a TIP-120 Darlington transistor where JP36 was removed.
Solder the emitter (rt. leg) into the hole near the final.
Solder the collector (center leg) into the other hole.
Solder a wire from the base (left leg) to the center tag of the RFGC.
Solder a 100 ohm resistor to the bottom tag of the RFGC.
Then solder a wire from the resistor to L6 pot.
Solder a wire from the top tag of the RFGC to the VR4 hole nearest
the back of the radio.
Mount TIP-120 to heatsink using new hardware and insulating pad.
Desolder orange and brown RFGC wires from board.
Solder a jumper in the holes to restore recieve.
Remove the resistor (dead key limmiter) from the bottom of the board
that jumps the JP36 modulator cap (220uf 25v.).
Solder the wires to the legs of the capacitor.
This mod is very touchy. You don't have to turn the knob much.
Sound Tracker radios require that the sound tracker feature be
disabled before any modifications.
29WST- RemoveC809 and C821 (C809 and C819 for 25WST) short
pins 1&2 of IC802.

WORST DEAL AND WORST SELLER I HAVE ENCOUNTERED, EVER!!!
Review created: 07/03/08
by:
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I paid for the item in less than 1 minute after purchase. I wrote 3 letters to the seller after I had not heard from him in a week. After two more days, he wrote to say he had sent the wrong thing. I received the item and wrote him and told him it was, indeed, the wrong item. Again, over a week passed and I did not hear from him. This is going on 3 weeks since the item was purchased. I finally called him and give him an address to send my refund to and to send me a shipping lable to send the item on to the rightful buyer. A week passes and no refund or mailing lable. I finally contacted my lawyer and made arrangements to have a suit brought against him (since this happened via U.S. Mail) and wrote and called him one more time and informed him of the pending law suit. Two days later, he put the money back in my account via Pay Pal. That was not the agreement to begin with. I have not left feedback for him yet, but will soon. It will not be good. If he has no more professionalism than that, he should find something to do besides sell on EBAY. Just my opinion. Thank you for reading my letter.

  Very Dissatisfied Customer
Review created: 05/12/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this New Cobra 29 LTD Classic Radio approximately March 30th. I received the unit approximately 1 week thereafter.
The radio was promised to "Kick Butt". The seller advertised this unit to having been peaked and super tuned, claiming to swing to 24 watts and performing over 100% modulation.
The description also claimed, "This radio is all done. You will not have to do anything to it."
However... Upon receiving this unit, I installed it to find that
1. The SWR meter is not accurate.
2. The bright/dim button does not work at all.
3. The unit is overmodulating
4. The echo in the radio is muffled and unclear.
5. Receives less than 1 mile.

I contacted the seller to inform him of the many issues and concerns that I have with the unit and his response was " You purchase this unit 3 weeks ago and you are just now contacting me?" (We had this unit shipped from PA. to OR.. Regular mail..which can certainly take this amount of time.) "This is a new radio and you will just have to have it looked at".

I found this response to be completely unacceptable. I consider this to be unprofessional, unethical and displays bad moral character...

I was completely dissatisfied with this transaction.

Thank you for the opportunity to share my conserns.

Good radio for the general public
Review created: 05/11/08
by:
duknut51 ( 5 )

I purchased the Dale Earnhardt 29ltd classic as a collectors item. The Cobra 29 is a good general cb radio for the average person and truck driver and has been popular for many years with both. I dont like to use it in my truck because there are many other radios that have better recieve and transmit qualities than the 29.

Cobra 29 LTD - The Standard for AM Band CB Radios!
Review created: 04/22/08

Throughout the years the Cobra 29 has been the icon of cb users, both professional and casual users. The 29 is a rock solid unit and even through several circuit board manufacturer changes, Cobra has maintained excellent quality. Out of the box the performance is top notch and the 29 is very versatile in adding or making user defined improvements.

After a little research, I chose to buy this cb for two reasons: Reliable name and a GREAT look. After getting the cb, it took just minutes to install it. But, what impressed me even more was the entire look of the cb. Awesome polished chrome finish and brilliant blue led's. I can't count how many compliments I've got from this cb! The look is also backed up by great performance. I'm running it on a single whip and it can reach a good distance. Thanks Cobra for yet another great radio!!!
