Album Notes Personnel: Michael Brook (guitar, bass, synthesizer, percussion); Ben Arion, Jo Burgess (vocals); Hahn Rowe, Nell Catchpole (violin); James Pinker (keyboards, percussion); Richard Henderson (sound effects). Engineers include: Michael Brook. Michael Brook comes up with some interesting stylistic counterpoints on COBALT BLUE, an album that recalls the textural-ambient moods of HYBRID. With guidance from brothers Brian and Roger Eno, Brook develops his "infinite guitar," an instrument whose tonalities resemble Brian Eno's sky-saw guitar treatments of ANOTHER GREEN WORLD. Brook often straddles the boundaries between moody, contemplative portraiture and traditional, quasi-folk arrangements. Brook seeks to effectively merge familiar melodies with more elite sounds. The overall nature of COBALT BLUE is one of gentle observations and pastoral atmospheres. Though the large number of 4AD releases fairly swallows up the record dividers, COBALT BLUE is definitely among the label's more interesting titles.

3 Stars - Good - ...what elevates Brook's pan-global stitching is the ability to produce dynamic tension within minimalist contexts, knowing when to attack or retreat, or simply to unfold exquisite aural wallpaper... Q (07/01/1992)
