During one memorable week in a coal-mining community in Pennsylvania, Ivan Zoschenko, back in his home town and signed on as the town deputy, awaits the release from prison of Reese Raynor, an old high-school football teammate. Reese has been in prison for beating his wife so badly that she ended up in a coma. Connecting with old friends and relatives, visiting the still comatose Crystal, getting a crush on a local doctor named Chastity, and awaiting the arrival of the infamous Reese, Ivan is forced to face up to a shameful secret he has held for many years.

Industry Reviews
"Triumphantly fulfilling the promise of her bestselling debut, O'Dell examines the tangled, enduring bonds of family and community in a Pennsylvania mining town....Powerful and uncompromising, yet radiant with love: this one's pretty close to a masterpiece."
Kirkus (04/15/2004)

      i didn't think I'd like a book I bought for 4 dollars

This was really well written, and I have to say, I didn't have high expectations for it. But it turned out to be worth all $4.24. The plot line is not very important to me, although i guess at the end, I did appreciate the here and now of the story. But the background info...so incredible and alarming and it's hard to not be moved by things O'Dell describes like mine fires that spread so far and so fast that the people had to move and the ground, like quicksand swallowed things like bikes into a hot fiery inferno. It has some really good imagery. It's worth the read if only for the detail.
