Synopsis The 11th Harry Bosch novel marks the detective's return to the LAPD after nearly three years of retirement, when he joins a unit of "closers" who specialize in using new technology and improved police techniques to find the answers to long-unsolved cases. His first assignment at the Open Unsolved unit involves the 1988 kidnap/murder of 16-year-old Rebecca Verloren. DNA found on the murder weapon proves to be that of a white supremacist, suggesting that Rebecca's biracial heritage may have prompted the killing--a possibility which, curiously enough, was not pursued during the original investigation. In the course of his inquiries, Bosch discovers hints of a police conspiracy, and also learns just how much and how painfully Rebecca's death affected the future course of her parents' lives.

Industry Reviews "Connelly comes as close as anyone to being today's Dostoyevsky of crime literature, and this is one of his finest novels to date, a likely candidate not only for book award nominations but for major bestsellerdom." (starred review) Publishers Weekly (04/04/2005)
"Leave it to Michael Connelly to reinvent the police procedural to suit himself....Having bent the form out of shape, Connelly artfully reclaims the procedural genre." New York Times Book Review - Marilyn Stasio (05/08/2005)
"[A] sharp, straightforward police procedural....Mr. Connelly continues to make his doomy, secretive Los Angeles a living, breathing character in his stories." New York Times - Janet Maslin (05/16/2005)
"A scrupulously plotted procedural....[A]ll the excitements of a terrific thriller well paced by a cool and fast-running narrative." Literary Review - Philip Oakes (05/01/2005)
"Connelly sets up a great premise here--the cop determined to reinvent himself in the face of a thoroughly recalcitrant world--and he makes the most of it. Hard-boiled fans don't like traditional commitment much (it makes us itchy), but Bosch turns us into believers. Give Connelly credit for having the courage to tinker with one of the richest characters in the genre." (starred review) Booklist - Bill Ott (03/15/2005)
