Clive Barker, How Could You...

Clive Barker is a master of horror and suspense. I went into this game hoping they could match this genius' deranged visions and put them into a palatable horror based game, sadly the makers didn't accomplish this. I'm going to layer this review out with good and bad things, as it does have some strong points. They got a lot of gore and some suspense into this game, but story was hard to follow sometimes (I'm kind of ADD and not much for these long cinematics though, so maybe it was just for me) The graphics are very good. Character and enemy detail are excellent. I'd have to say the one huge highlight of this game is definitely the enemy detail, absolutely gorey and magnificent. I'm not going to comment on the background because it almost seems like a side scroller as its very repetitive at some points. No control customization? Who even does that anymore.. nuff said. There are definitely a lot of enemies to kill so if you're looking for a straight shoot um up game you'll love this one. THE ENEMIES ARE MINDLESS. There is no AI in this game to speak of really. Occasionally a monster with a gun will hide behind a wall but besides that no flanking, no covering fire, no hiding, its just mindless straight barrage after barrage of attacks, most of the enemies will not even try to avoid your fire. Another really cool feature of this game is body possession. To play your tactics out best, different characters have different weapons and magical abilities (some really cool, some really worthless) and when you want to utilize those abilities or weapons yourself, or when the game tells you you need to, you can switch to any of the other characters in your squad. Sound was very good, from music to quips from various characters during battles. If your playing at night with all the lights off and the sound cranked it can definitely add to this game. Now to get to the game killer in my eyes. This is basically a track based game. you can back up about 30 secs to the last door or obstacle you hit, that's it. There is nothing to explore, there are no side ways to go, there aren't various routes if you want to go back and play the game again, and the monsters come from the front 97% of the time. When they come from the back, they had to have magically appeared because there is no where they could have come from. This game might as well be like Time Crisis and decide where it wants you to go. Lastly, there are way too many load points and they each take ~30 seconds. It really detracts from the game play as well. My last words are save yourself 50 bucks and buy Doom 3 for your computer, its a better game anyways. If you must have a PS3 game there isn't one too close to this but of course of you want a good FPS buy Rainbow Six Vegas if you want to control other people in your squad or Resistance fall of man if you just want to kill stuff. Hope this helped and saved you some money.
