About Intelligent Design Series Wedges

What is The Intelligent Design Series Wedge Treatment?

The Intelligent Design Series Wedge starts life as a lightly used wedge. The first step in the finishing process is to strip the heads of the old chrome. Then, "U" (also know as “Square” or "box") grooves are cut into the face of the wedge. These grooves are cut precisely to the full USGA legal depth and width. It's important to note that many Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) do not cut grooves to the full legal depth at the factory. This is one example of how Intelligent Design Series Wedges are superior to the wedges available in the typical golf shops. After the grooves are completed, we then drill (port) 6 holes in the back of the club muscle, raising the center of gravity. This moves the sweet spot to the center of the club, just where it should be, giving your ball a lower more penetrating flight with a piercing trajectory and adding more control. Then, the head is polished and, any small dings or dents are removed. The next step in the process is the application of a layer of copper. The copper layer is applied beneath the chrome for added weight and, since copper is a softer material than chrome, to produce a slightly softer feel to the club. Then, the new chrome is applied and the club head is buffed to our proprietary Tour Satin Finish. Finally, the face of the club is sand blasted to provide texture and additional "bite".

Intelligent Design Series Wedge Treatment Advantages

Intelligent Design Series wedges are superior to anything on the market. Our Tour Satin Chrome finish is not susceptible to the bubbling, cracking, chipping, and peeling found with typical nickel chrome. These wedges are more durable than factory wedges while providing a softer feel. Intelligent Design Series Tour Satin Chrome wedges combine the best features of chrome, raw, oil-can, and gun metal finished wedges. Intelligent Design Series Tour Satin Chrome wedges provide reduced glare while providing a softer feel and the outstanding durability of chrome. This Satin Chrome Finish will not rust until the chrome wears off. Since The Intelligent Design Series Tour Satin Chrome is more durable than the cheaper nickel chrome, you can look forward to a long, long life without rust. Perhaps most importantly, Intelligent Design Series Tour Satin Chrome Wedges produce significantly more spin than standard factory wedges, especially from the rough. Many OEM clubs have "V" grooves which are cast into the face of the wedge. Intelligent Design Series wedges have "U" grooves that are cut to the full USGA legal depth and width.

  SOMETHING CALLED A SANDWEDGE
Review created: 06/27/06

I can't beleive someone would sell this piece of crap on e-bay. No wonder they used a stock photo. If I would have seen a picture of the club there would be no way I would have bought it. It said other than a little nick that it was in very good condition. The grooves are worn thin. It looks like it was used to chop wood. My sandwedge that I was going to replace is 10 times in better shape than the one I threw my money away on. I put it back in the box so no one will see it.

I have bought a few things from E-bay. But from now on I will think twice.

The best wedge ever produced. Perfect weight, feel, and awesome spin when rusted. Still a favorite on the PGA tour even though you can't get one from Cleveland anymore.

First of all, I don't even know why you guys at eBay decided to post the first review. The comments made in the first review is about a buyer that bid and won the abused club and a seller that maybe wasn't all that truthful about the condition of the club. Let me quote eBay under Reviews & Guides; "This is your review of the product and not a review of any seller that might have sold you this product." The first review is NOT about the product itself. It could have been the highest rated sand wedge in the world but if it was abused, no buyer would, of course, appreciate it.

This particular line of sand wedges I believe propelled Cleveland to it's sand wedge status - all the way to its latest models. This is a very solid club, playable from any lie.

I would compare the first review to a Porsche - that's been in a crash. The full line of Porsches got tainted because ONE person beat up ONE car.

  amazing wedge

I have the 49 special version of the RTG wedge and love it. It gets up amazingly easy from almost every lie and drops and stops on a dime. Its finish doesnt seem to help spin as I had heard before as I have a chrome vokey that will easily outspin this club but for control nothing beats it inside 90. This truly is the trusty rusty in my bag and have yet to find one that can beat it. As for looks this club looked like it had played 200 greens 2 weeks after I got it but soaking it for a night in the pacific gave it an even beautiful rusty look. If you can get your hands on one do so and dont be afraid of the looks of a used one it really will grow on you, barring that it hasnt been abused.

I own the 49* Special PW and a 57* SW. I love the PW but I've never hit the 57* very well. The 57 has a bounce of 8 I think. I haven't been able to figure out how to get the contact required to impart my will on the ball. I've since bought a 56/14 chrome 588 and it is a world a difference. Its not as good from tight lies but for most sand traps it gives you a better chance of getting it into a 1 putt area. With the 49* I can get the ball to a 1 putt distance pretty often and it has really helped me lower my score. The 57* is best for deep traps that never get raked and awful lies. Otherwise the 56/14 is much more forgiving to those of us that can't hit a dime size spot of the clubface every time.

  Amazing Wedge!
Review created: 05/08/07

I absolutely love this wedge! It has a great classic look and thanks to the variable bounce sole, you can hit any shot you can imagine with it with ease! I got my 60 degree lob wedge about a month ago and have been nothing but pleased since then. The brown finish that the club comes with is still wearing off but I was surprised that as an added bonus when you first hit balls it will leave a clear mark on the club face where you struck the shot. This gave me instant feedback if I was hitting on the heel, toe, etc and was able to concentrate on hitting everything on the center of the clubface. I've also noticed I get the most spin with this wedge out of any wedge I've ever had in my bag. This is awesome because as the face rusts over time it will only give me more spin! As I mentioned before with the DSG sole you can set the club face in any position you want and the club retains a solid look at address. Combine this with a feather soft feel and a great shaft and you've got yourself one heck of a golf club! I've been thinking hard about any downsides to this club while I've been writing about the positives and I realized I really can't think of a single one. This club is that solid. So if you want a great club with a classic look, is super versatile, feels great and will rust over time this is it!

Cleveland 588 RTG DSG 56 * Sand Wedge Golf Club
Review created: 11/09/09
by:

Cleveland wedges including this model are used by Professional golfers worldwide. The DSG allows for different shots from 90 yards in and soft shots around the greens. Also a excellent sand wedge from those tough lies in bunkers. New wedges like this sell from $90 to $129 depending on model, manufacture and seller. Drivers, Putters and wedges are very important and personal clubs, it's always good too know your using the best product.

The club was as shown, condition 8 of 10. It is a great club and excellent value.

  Cleveland 588 RTG Wedge
Review created: 07/22/09
by:

Cleveland RTG wedges have been the only wedges in my bag for ten years. A lot of people would never want to carry a rusty club, but I love the satiny look of these clubs when they are properly aged. The 60 degree LW is my "go-to" club for chip shots just off the green. While tour players supposedly like the rusted surface for added spin, my level of play is not at the level of sophistication to properly take advantage of this feature. What I like most about Cleveland's RTG wedges are the feel, the wide club faces, and extremely low number of mishits.

Cleveland 588 RTG valuable from many conditions
Review created: 07/21/09

The Cleveland 588 design became the item from which all other wedges are judged, both from Vokey, Callaway, Ping, or Roger Cleveland's original business. (Mr. Cleveland is now with Callaway). It is a functional wedge from both dry and moist grass conditions, and is a general sand wedge design for regular or powdery sand. All of the 588s have a moderately-wide toe, middle, and heel sold width, and as such are good for normal or wet grass conditions. The moderately-wide sand wedge sole is for normal or fluffy sand - it is not optimum for hard pan. The wedges all have a moderate to large bounce angle - again promoting the most utility.

The Cleveland 900 series has some of the flange ground off, and would be more applicable to tight, dry conditions. Plus the rounded heel allows the 900 to be fanned open more than the 588 series for flop shots. I personally find the 588 to be more valuable for the bermuda grass, semi-tropical, humid conditions I play in. If I played in the desert Southwest I would recommend the 900 series.

The RTG is a "rusting tour grind". Pros think the rust will impart extra spin onto their shots. I believe this to be true, but only if you keep the rust from accumulating in the grooves. On the face - good, in the grooves - bad. The natural steel rusty condition is great for avoiding blinding reflections.

The current Clevelan offering, the CG-14, optimizes the face size, axis of rotation, MOI, COG, and grooves of the Cleveland line. While I would not refuse an inexpensive 588, if you are considering "new club" prices, then I would recommend the pearl finished CG-14s over the 588s or 900s. The CG-14s replaced the 588s in my bag.

Cleveland 588 RTG Wedge: An Awesome Club
Review created: 04/14/09

I love this Cleveland Wedge. Unfortunately they do not sell this wedge brand new any more, so I rely on buying them off ebay. It is a great wedge and I have used them for about 9 years now. Many tour pros are still relying on these wedges as well. If you want a great wedge, don't hesitate to buy at Cleveland 588 RTG wedge.

Review of an RTG 56 wedge
Review created: 12/07/08
by:

Heavier than the regular Tour 588 56 wedge.
Wanted to see what the difference was between other wedges I own.
Currently in and out of my bag are 56 Tour 588 and a 60 Tour 900;
Taylor Made's RAC Black 56 and 60; and Callway Vintage Forged 56 and 60.
I might send this one out to Nomad and have it adjusted both on the grind
and weight.
