To commemorate the label's 25th anniversary in 1987, A&M Records released 25 greatest hits collections by 25 of their biggest artists. It's obvious how important Karen and Richard Carpenter were to the label by the fact that their compilation follows only that of label head Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass. The label cheated a bit, however, by simply taking their first Carpenters CD compilation, 1985's YESTERDAY ONCE MORE, and repackaging it in a new sleeve. Still, A&M can be forgiven because whatever the title, this is a flawless collection. THE CLASSICS, VOL. 2 gathers 27 of the Carpenters' finest, from their earliest singles through all of their classic hits to their later, more experimental items. The selection and sequencing are perfect, and anyone who wishes to have a concise selection of Richard and Karen Carpenter's best work need look no further.
