Publisher's Note The rods, reels, and related piscatoriana from the early days in England to the fly-fishing renaissance of the 1970s. Anglers are always fascinated with fly fishing's golden age, and nothing brings back those years as vividly as a fine old rod and reel bearing the honorable scars of a lifetime afield. "Classic & Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle" features in-depth coverage of traditional gear from the 1860s to the 1920s, and affordable production tackle from the 1930s through the 1960s. Campbell discusses the history, design, construction, fishing characteristics, and identification of important gear, and offers tips on future collectibles; he adds specific instructions for the care and feeding of antique and classic tackle. He includes sections on: -- English and American tackle origins -- Early makers of three-, four-, and six-strip rods -- American tackle smiths -- Finding vintage fly tackle -- Keeping, repairing, and using the classics Lushly illustrated with hundreds of photographs, drawings, and vintage advertisements, "Classic & Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle" is the new bible for tradition-minded fly fishers.
Industry Reviews This book definitely holds some pleasant surprises for the reader. Instead of the expected catalog of collectibles, Campbell provides an interesting account of successes, failures, and oddities. The author, editor of Fishing Collectibles magazine, brings together many sources (the bibliography lists 45) to construct an interesting history. His work concentrates on rods and reels, although information on flies and other accessories merits a single chapter. There is coverage of English, American, and Celtic tackle manufacturers, which allows readers to compare tackle development in different countries. The book provides price information but does not attempt to set prices on individual items. Recommended for fly-fishing collections, although the specialized subject matter may limit its use.
