A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin (2000, Paperback, Reissue)

I had read the first book of this series and couldn't wait to get to the next one. And I wasn't disappointed. If you disregard the fact that there are soooo many insignificant characters referred to, the book is terrific. At one point they refer to the character by his last name, then by 'Ser Thomas' or whatever so it is difficult to know who is who sometimes. But, all in all, reading goes along very well. The author writes one paragraph about one particular character, the next paragraph is about another major character, etc. Stick with it and you will find it extremely interesting.

I am an avid fantasy reader and stumbled across Mr. martin's books via afriend who left the first in this series at my house. It sat on my desk for over a year before I decided I might actually read it. After the first few pages I was hooked. I enjoy how he takes you through the story from the perspectives of all of the "main" characters, yet more or less progresses chronologically. The characters are well rounded and and I found my self becoming attached to their stories.

I also enjoy how each person's story is part of a whole that comes full circle. This particular book is the 2nd in the series, and continues right where book one left off. I highly recommend this series to any fantasy afficianado.

I was given the third book in this series to read and found George R. Martin's writing style fascinating. So much so, that I came to eBay to locate and purchase the other two in the series. I especially enjoyed the parallel story lines, subsequent weaving of characters crossing the same real estate along diferent timelines. An excellent read. I look forward to reading the fourth book "A Clash of Crows".

George R. R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" series is about the best fantasy series I have ever read, and I have read a lot of books in this category. The characters are very well developed, complex and believable. It makes you wish you could meet them (some because you hate them and others because you love them.)
The way he describes the environment, the customs of the people, all of it seems exactly as if he looked back in time to a medieval period and just described what he saw. There are a lot of gruesome descriptions of war and killing and all that, but also a lot of humor mixed in. Everyone should read all the books in the series... each one is better than the last, and personally I can't wait for the next one to be published!
