Walter Whacks Me A Second Time!

Walter Becker’s brand new CD, Circus Money, is somewhat different from his previous CD 11 Tracks of Whack. But I am still whacked by it nonetheless. Unlike 11 Tracks of Whack, Circus Money more closely resembles a Steely Dan record but has a different feeling to it, and a smattering of what feels like autobiographical content. Mr. Becker must have lived an interesting life or at the very least is tuned in to some very interesting characters that make up the subject of these songs. Many of the tracks have a reggae beat that is artfully arranged into the lyrical content. I laughed myself silly at the antics of Selfish Gene, and wondered about the circumstances of Paging Audrey, which is another brilliant track on this wonderful CD. I loved 11 Tracks of Whack, but for those of you that did not, I would recommend Circus Money highly as I think it has all the things you were looking for that you couldn't find on 11 Tracks of Whack. Circus Money grabs you right from the first listen, and stays with you. It also unfolds itself more intensely at each listen, and in that respect, it is very much like 11 Tracks of Whack only you "get it" much sooner. So get out there and GET IT!

  CIRCUS MONEY
Review created: 04/09/09

Walter Beckers 2nd album picks up a reggae beat on most tunes. However downtown cannon and upside looking down carry the traditional Steely Dan sound
great 2nd effort on this one. I actually took out 11 tracksof wack and started listening to it again as well. A must have for any Steely Dan fan.

Nice Album from W. Becker. Excellent production (like Steely Dan) from E. Schiener. Somewhat quirky songs but super smart subject content and lyrics.

Much better than "11 Tracks of Whack"
Review created: 12/24/08

I got my copy of Walter Becker's "Circus Money" a couple
of weeks ago and have now listened to it 6 or 7 times,
enjoying it more each time (always a good sign). This album
is much jazzier (with some discernible reggae and hip-hop
influence) and upbeat than Becker's earlier "11 tracks of
whack" which I found rather tinny and bleak (Becker's grim
demeanor becomes understandable when you read about what
demons he was trying to exorcise). On "Circus Money" (which
was not produced by Donald Fagen), Becker employs a trio of
female vocalists (who might well be the same girls who did the
backup singing on the latest Steely Dan tour) to help carry
the vocals (Becker can use the help), and a richer variety of
instruments (love that saxophone). The lyrics are typical
of the writing Becker and Fagen do for Steely Dan--dense, and
often dark and sardonic, but are lifted up by the music. This
is not a Steely Dan album, but you can see Becker's contribution
to Steely Dan more clearly than in "11 tracks of whack".

My major criticism: Becker's using a synthesizer to create
a snare drum affect. I didn't care for this on "11 tracks of
whack", and it shows up on a couple of cuts on this album.
Makes me wonder if Becker was using some older material as
filler. Still, I like "Circus Money" far more than "11 tracks
of whack."
