Released in 1990, the two-CD set CHRONICLES was the first "best of" compilation from Rush, spanning their recording career from 1974's self-titled debut until 1990's PRESTO. Although the RETROSPECTIVE VOL.1 & 2 discs from 1997 contained a lengthier and slightly different track listing (and boasted better sound due to remastering), CHRONICLES is still a superb collection of Rush's hits. Rush is primarily known as a progressive band with a leaning towards science fiction themes, but many forget that their roots lay in the bluesy riff-rock of Led Zeppelin and Cream. Look no further than the early cuts "Finding My Way," "Working Man," and a live take of "What You're Doing" for the proof.
Drummer/lyricist Neil Peart replaced original member John Rutsey after the debut RUSH, and the band immediately shifted direction, developing their trademark sound, with an emphasis on more technically and lyrically challenging material. Some of the finest hard rock ever recorded can be found on CHRONICLES--"Closer To The Heart," "Tom Sawyer," "The Spirit Of Radio," "New World Man," "A Passage To Bangkok (live)," and "Distant Early Warning," to name a few. There's simply not a weak track included on CHRONICLES, which makes it a fine collection of Rush classics.

There is no such thing as a bad RUSH album!

Plain and simply put. THIS ALBUM ROCKS!!! It has a very nice mix from various years and generations of some of RUSHs best and most popular hits. I have been a RUSH fan for as long as they have been a band. This Canadian trio has 3 of the most talented musicians ever to come together in Rock & Roll. Mr. Pert (percussionist) IS simply the greatest drummer of all time. I have never heard an argeument from anyone about that. People can argue who the greatest all time guitarist or bassist is. But when you mention the mind boggling works of Neil Pert. No one cares to say there is better. Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee are SUPERB musicians. Few musicians tear up a Bass guitar like Geddy Lee. Flea from RHCP comes to mind. Alex Lifeson has ALWAYS been VERY UNDER RATED!!! Just because the man makes his job LOOK easy doesn't mean his job IS easy. If your into a fine mix of melodics and hard rock sound with lyrics that tell interesting little stories, you will love RUSH. There is no head banging here. Just fabulous acoustic guitar, fabulous guitar riffs that hit pretty damn hard & some of the most meodic bass guitar you will EVER hear. The Chronicles album is a GREAT album because it gives you a little taste of the band through the decades. In my personal opinion, the older RUSH is the better RUSH. They still tour to this day. GO SEE THEM if they ever come within 2112 miles of your town. It is just about the best way to spend 3 hours of your life and enjoy some true talent.

Neil Pert writes all the lyrics to RUSHs songs. He has a way of letting your imagination wander to a differnet place and time when you REALLY get into the groove of what RUSH is about. This album will lead you to wanting to buy more albums because like I said, RUSH Chronicles is just A TASTE of what their music is like over a number of decades. The ways they have evolved. How they moved and changed with the times. And how they STILL continue to make great music.

Also, Rush has been putting out albums since 1974. How many bands do YOU know of that still have it together after almost 35 years in the business? Not many. These guys are truly connected mind, body and spirit. And it shows in the albums they put out and the shows they perform. BUY THE ALBUM & SEE THE SHOW! Treat yourself to some wonderful music experiences. You'll be glad you did.

      Rush 2 CD set

The music is a collection of Rush's best along with some songs I haven't heard before. It's like reading a history of Rush.
The music quality is great though it plays softer than most of my music, requiring me to turn up the volume.
