Album Notes CHRONICLES contains: SCARECROW (1985)/THE LONESOME JUBILEE (1987)/BIG DADDY (1989). Personnel: John Cougar Mellencamp (vocals); Rickie Lee Jones, Laura Mellencamp (vocals); David Grissom (guitar); Larry Crane (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, background vocals); Mike Wanchic (electric guitar, background vocals); Ry Cooder (slide guitar); Lisa Germano (violin); Nancy Arnold (oboe); A. Jack Wilkins (saxophone); Richard Fanning (trumpet); John Cascella (keyboards); Kenny Aronoff (vibraphone, drums, tambourine, background vocals); Toby Myers (bass guitar, background vocals); Willie Weeks (bass guitar); Crystal Taliefero, Georgia Jones, Pat Peterson, Sarah Flint, Mimi Mapes (background vocals). Audio Remasterer: Bob Ludwig. Island's three-disc John Cougar Mellencamp "box set" consists of the 2005 reissues of Scarecrow, The Lonesome Jubilee, and Big Daddy. Though Chronicles is a significantly cheaper way to pick up each album, and it does indeed come in a "box," it features none of the bells and whistles that the term often implies (liner notes, photos, etc.) That said, these are three of Mellencamp's strongest records -- though replacing Big Daddy with the superior Uh-Huh would have made the collection more appealing -- and there are enough bonus studio and live tracks on the reissues to warrant a repurchase by longtime fans. ~ James Christopher Monger
