Stones Throw, one of hip-hop's most consistent indie labels, in collaboration with the cable network Adult Swim, has put together arguably the best underground compilation of 2006. Reflecting the label's diversity, CHROME CHILDREN features innovative hip-hop aplenty as well as miscellaneous cuts that span the realms of funk, soul, and trip-hop. Superproducer Madlib and the late, great J Dilla are the dominant forces on this one, with Madlib producing tracks by M.E.D., Percee P & Quasimoto, Young Jazz Rebels, and 'Lib and MF Doom's Madvillain project--and Dilla providing beats for Guilty Simpson, Madlib's solo joint, and his own. Fittingly enough, the two come together on "No $ No Toke," a short-but-sweet outtake from their collaboration, Jaylib.
