Recorded live at the Biltmore Estate, North Carolina in December 1996. Recorded at the titular mansion in Asheville, North Carolina in 1996, Judy Collins' CHRISTMAS AT THE BILTMORE ESTATE was a popular special for the A&E network. This CD is the soundtrack of that special, with Collins' lovely, intimate versions of traditional Christmas carols and popular seasonal songs interspersed with brief reveries about Christmases past. Heavy on traditional airs and carols like "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "The Holly and the Ivy," the set also includes lighthearted takes on "Silver Bells," "Jingle Bells," and even a lightly jazzy "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" that recalls Ella Fitzgerald's famous version. Resolutely tasteful to the point of restrained, this is nonetheless a fine Christmas album for those who don't want to hear Bing Crosby again.
