It should be titled "Renaissance Choral Performance"
Plank uses mostly secondary sources for this book. I can't say that much is original. The premise that chant can use instruments is not founded on the historical philosophy, tradition or context they would be used in. When he does state that chant can use instruments, he encompasses all eras. This practice would not have been held in the medieval ages - even through the polyphonic writers of Notre Dame. An ambiguous vocal line does not infer instrument as musicologist once said it did in the 20th century. It’s the 21st century – Plank restates everything that previous authors misinterpreted with nothing new to add.
