“He took a seat in the chair by the bed and reached for her hand. Her skin was pale, almost waxy, her body seemed smaller, and he noted the spidery lines that had begun to form at the corners of her eyes. Still, she seemed remarkable to him as she had been the first time he’d ever seen her. It amazed him that he had known her almost eleven years. Not because the length of time was extraordinary, but because those years seemed to contain more … life than the first thirty-two years without her. It was the reason he came to the hospital today; it was the reason he came everyday. He had no other choice. Not because it was expected—though it was—but because he could not image being anywhere else. They spend hours together, but their nights were spent apart. Ironically, there was no choice in that, either, for he couldn’t leave his daughters alone. These days fate made all of his decisions for him.

The question that I ask myself then is, does this book move me emotionally and is it worthy of the legacy of this great writer/storyteller? Nicholas Sparks is such a storyteller and his new book, The Choice, may be the best story he has ever written. Disarming, charming, and yet thought-provoking, Sparks takes us in again with another great tale that will not disappoint his legions of fans.
The beginning of the story starts off predictably enough. Love found followed by love lost. Local boy makes good, Travis Parker is a veterinarian in a small town in North Carolina. Things seem to come easily to him. Living what he considers to be the good life, he has financial security, friends, family, boating, swimming, and regular barbecues with his buddies. A dog and a house, he has it made. He holds the thought that a woman would only cramp his style, a sort of causal, and advent-guard country doctor’s practice, with a hippie’s Carpe Diem attitude. No woman would tolerate that. His relationships are still borne, uneventful, and unemotional attachments. That is until he meets his new red-headed neighb
