Homage? Satire? Both?
Whatever conclusions you draw, this CD is a hoot. Pretty much the entire gamut of psychedelia is covered - in all original material - by XTC masquerading as "The Dukes of Stratosphear". Yardbirds, Barrett-era Pink Floyd, Beatles, Hollies, Beach Boys, Love, Byrds, Jimi, et. al., are echoed and channelled in this lovingly rendered package.
Echoing clocks, cheesy vox organ, distorted fuzz-, reverb-, and feedback-guitar, cryptic lyrics, cornball McCartneyesque music-hall schmaltz, snippets of fantasy stories, drinking songs, "Walrus" sound collages, richly textured sonic tapestries...at one point a telephone voice chides the group for releasing "such an obscene, degeneratized (sic) song...and I'm complimenting you by even *considering* it a song!" (Note: there's nothing profane, vulgar, or even mildly suggestive to be found on the disk.)
Boy, do I wish I'd had this album back in "the day." You know what I mean.
